Must admit that’s the first time ive seen one installed , alas don’t know how effective they are , plus see the FBH has been removed or not fitted in the first place due to it’s warmer climate

An oil catch can only helps if there's a particularly design issue with the breather system, which on the TDV6 there isn't, so IMO, I can't see the point in fitting one.

hi mate

many thks , so does it simply collect the excess oil within the intercooler system plse , ie , from the oil that’s fed to the turbo

Have seen some mention of them being fitted onto the petrol V8 4.4

thks as always

No. The catch tank is plumbed into the crankcase breather circuit, so collects oil which would find its way into the intake from the breather.
As the engine is designed to use the oil from the breather for lubrication of the inlet valves, removing the oil from the intake will likely increase valve wear.
Some engine designs pass excessive oil through the breather, especially as they wear, in which case a catch tank can be beneficial by removing a proportion of the excess.
However the TDV6 doesn't seem to pass much oil, so any benefits would be negligible, and potentially cause more harm than good.

Im no expert, but I can see that length of pipe causing issues with crankcase pressure, ie the pipes are to long.
I also reckon he will end up with that white/grey sludge that can form as the hot gases meet the cold pipes.

Plus the bracket he has the can mounted on wont last long on two m8 rivnuts.

There is a theory that catch cans are a self fulfilling prophecy, in that they increase crankcase pressure thus increasing oil blow by and therefore you think they are doing you a favour. Who knows.
All i can say is that on my Td5, there is not a great deal of oil reaching my Intercooler and i have no catch can. Personally, i wouldnt bother fitting one, but some people swear by them. Usually Aussies for some reason? Maybe because they have all dusted their engines!

You've hit the nail on the head there.
Australian engines would likely suffer more bore wear due to dust ingestion, which as you said would cause more blowby gasses, thus ejecting more oil mist from the crankcase.

In the UK, there's real no dust to wear the engine, so no need to install a catch can. ;)
