My first post and already looking for advice :(

So as the title suggests we had a front wheel bearing go on the motorway, no warning it just went and by the time we got it across to the hard shoulder it had caught fire hence the melted rubber and fire extinguisher powder in the picture. Anyway, we had it towed home and I started stripping it out today to assess the damage and this is what I have:

As you can see while trying to pull the wheel bearing the whole shaft came out, I'm not overly phased by this but I'm also no mechanic. So I'm looking for some advice, what should I be looking for, what should I be thinking about changing/renewing, along with the wheel bearing, seal, boots, oil etc? Also how can I tell if the CV joint is OK or needs replacing and do I need any alignment tools etc to put the drive-shaft back in place?

I'm on a pretty tight budget so is it worth just getting a second hand axle for £125 (ebay)? Also, being on a budget I'm tempted to go with a new britpart hub, are they any good?

Grateful for any advice you can throw my way.
 
DO NOT buy a Britpart hub unless its the genuine one
If you try to save money on the hub and buy cheap, you'll be renewing it again soon

There must be a reason for the difference in price

The wheel bearing on the Discovery II comes as part of the HUB
 
Thanks Nelly, I'm happy enough with changing the hub its a bolt off bolt on thing, I'm more concerned with the driveshaft and cv joint, I don't know what should be there once I clean off all the crap or what will need replacing, I'm assuming there should be some sort of seal and I don't know how to check the cv joint properly.

As far as the britpart debate goes, there is a good LR garage up the road who are britpart suppliers so I'm sure it'll be genuine I've just read mixed reviews.
 
We carry a couple of new cheap bearings when we go to Europe, too expensive to buy genuine and I guess for most users the cheap bearings will probably outlast their ownership.

Couldn't budge it with the hub puller but the whole shaft came out by hand after a couple of taps to try and break the corrosion. The hub is more or less in two pieces but other than that everything else looks in reasonable condition save for the melted rubber
 
Get the D2BC seal as well, not the genuine one as it is the wrong size

Why do I always buy these cars, land rovers, mg's...... o_O.....,

I had a look on the D2BC website, can't find them on the offers page, anyone have any idea if they're available on ebay?
