Well what an ordeal!

Get the dreaded phonecall from the missis..... Cars brock down at side of a busy dual-carriage way! BASTARD!

Took some tools with me in me mates car. Turned up, Rozzers there and everything as Rangie was blocking most of lane 1 (Luckily knew him as I work next door to cop shop at the firestation phew)

Anyway, looked under and saw front prop hanging off. Took it off and off we all went (Wife still shaking ha :frown:)

What im basically going on about is, Is this a clssic sign of UJ failure? Or somet worse? The signs according to the wife directly before it happened were, loud rummbling and a lot of heavy vibration bfore BANG!

Going to have to get a new prop, plus going to get two new uj's for the rear. But this happening shouldnt have cuased more damage should it? (Apart from the battle scars to the sump lol see pic)

Your Uj's are looking a little past their best. Need lubing. I had mine go on the rear of the 110 on the M6. Check your flangee thingys for damage round the yokes too.

Greasing them now and again does help. It looks a dry as a witches tit. Also check the VCU.

Yes mate the yokes have been proper damaged too, lumps have been bashed out and looking real sorry for themselves. Had one go on me in me old 90, was pretty savage. Wife must have crapped her self :(

Cheers Wammers, would i check the VCU when i get the new front prop on?

You can check it with prop off, put a socket on output shaft flange nut. Ideally flange should turn 90 degrees in one minute with 27 pounds feet of torque applied. But if it turns at all with steady pressure it will be fine.

Thanks mate ill do that ;)

I've discovered from my P38 experiences that it pays to pay attention to any new noises very soon as they seem to go from minor problem to catastrophic in a very short space of time.

I'd be very surprised if you weren't getting some noise from that joint before it finally let go.

I bought my last front prop from Island and it turned out to be a Britpart one. It lasted 13 months before the bearings disintegrated. I'd really not recommend one of those, cheap as they may be.

Your missus was lucky to get away with that, it could have pole vaulted on the prop and rolled. That joint has been failing for a long time, total lack of proper maintenance.

looked under and saw front prop hanging off.

Seems like the nuts & bolts worked themselves lose came off, like you say a lack of maintenance, but you shouldn't be doing maintenance on nuts and bolts, they should have been tight from the start, its recommended you ALWAYS put NEW nuts and bolts on the prop, every time, as they stretch

Nuts & bolts are still in place if you look at the photo's Dopey, it's the Hardy Spicer UJ that has seized and broken up:)

Bolts on UJ flanges do not need to be very tight, they should not stretch, they are close tolerance, shanked shear bolts, not tension bolts. Most important things to change are the lock nuts.

Yeah I hold my hands up, I could have looked after the UJ's better.... By a long way. And i will do in future!

There wouldnt have been any pole voltin (On this occasion) as it had snapped at the gearbox end of the shaft. If if had snapped the other end it could have dug in.

Thanks Guy for the heads up, ill stay away from the island parts mate if they are Britpart ;)

Maintainence wise i always stay well on top of things.... Bloody UJ's :D

Oops. Don't get me wrong - Island as a company are excellent. Unfortunately my experience of britpart props is that they use inferior Ujs. One of them didn't even have a grease nipple, not even a drilling for one. If I hadn't got the garage to fit it I would have noticed at the time.

No worries mate i know what ya mean ;)

I just taken off the yoke end that was still connected today. It was the bit that had obviously failed and it too didnt have any grease nipples. So i couldnt have maintained it if i wanted too! Except change it for new ones of course, but last time i checked them (Which wasnt actually that long ago) they looked no where near as bad or dry as they look in the pics.

Got some on oreder with grease nipples now and two for the rear while im at it lol :D

Don't forget the VCU check or you may end up with another knackered prop and a shot front diff.
