I know we had a thread on this a while ago, but am wondering whether people have managed to pass their MOT without a cat?

Reason for this is I am in the middle of a rebuild and it turns out my exhaust down pipe is all corroded around the flexi bit. So I need a new one. A non cat one is £20 and a cat one is £120 for a Britpart one :(

If yours is a diesel like it says in your profile you dont have a CAT you have a particulate filter

Really? I did not know that. Haha, what a noob!

Yeah, it is a 300tdi but a really late one.

So the thing behind the flexi bit isn't a cat? Do I need one there?

Reading around, the general advice seems to be that if it was fitted at the factory, it needs to be there. That said, the MOT stations don't have any kind of definitive list of which vehicles had what fitted, so provided the exhaust gasses pass the standards for the year you should slip through unnoticed.

I had an MOT at the beginning of June. I have a 2006 Defender and nobody said anything about my cat free stainless exhaust system. I do not have an undertray fitted either, so it was out in the open for all the world to see.

Thanks all. I will go for one without anything on then.

Do I need a flexi bit, or will a fixed one be ok?

I'd go with a flexi one, they seem to be cheap enough. I would have thought that IF you go off road, then the strains on the mountings will cause the engine & box to move around more thus putting more stress on the exhaust.

Bugger, by the time you had said that I had already bought a downpipe for £25 delivered without a flexi...

Save that for the mot's could last longer than the landy:D
Don't forget guys that an MOT, unlike a dog, IS just for Christmas (or whatever day it is done);)

I have a straight through stainless pipe 2.5 inch just reaches past the door and mounted to the engine and box no flexi works great moves wth the engine as one unit.No probs with mot no egr, pump flat out my mate mots it and said the gas read out is bang on so decat away boys.

I've had the solid pipe with no flexi on since last year with no issues. No mot problems removing the DPF either.
