the catalytic converter on my 96(N) 3.9 V8i LPG Disco has started to knock, its just passed its MOT but the noise is driving my missus nuts. i would like to know can i remove my cat Y pipe and replace it with a non catalyst Y pipe (i can get a non cat Y pipe for about 15 quid and a replacement Y pipe with cats for about £150) my questions are these: 1:-would my disco pass its next MOT without its cats as it runs on LPG? 2:- would the earlier 3.5 V8 non cat Y pipe fit on my later 3.9 model. it would save me a lot of cash.

It could possibly pass on an emissions test when running LPG but it was built with a cat and therefore must have one for MOT. Depends how friendly you are with the tester! As this is a 'dual fuel' vehicle, it will need to have a cat to remain within the law if it's to be driven on the road.

You may also run into problems with the control systems as the LPG mixture is usually looped into the lamda sensor. (So I'm told)

dunno whether it would fit but......
why don't you fit the none cat version and just shove the cat version back on for the MOT.
obviously this is a casual observation as i would never condone such a thing and obviously think you should skin yourself to save the planet:D

Just take down pipe off that has the cat in it replace with Defender down pipe [fits but no cat and much cheaper than Disco one]I tried to do it my self but no ramps and crap tools so local garage put it on for me.You will need long extension T bar to get bolts out of manifold connection.Wear safety glasses, or your sure to get an eye full of rust.

Dont need to be defender one, can buy disco one without cat. Not sure which is cheaper tho?

£50! takin mine in soon!

It's the platinum in them that makes em valuable. And with China & India expanding so fast. There's a worldwide shortage of platinum. Which has pushed the scrap price thru the ceiling.

Is the cat gone or just loose? If loose, why simply have it reclamped.

Here is the theory;

Your vehicle can run without a cat but you technically must change a little part called the tune resistor. LR has 4-5 of them for different setups. They alter the signal to the ECU to allow it to run in a "no cats no lambdas" modes. Sadly, they never made one for a "no cats with lambda" situation.
Without changing the resistor, the engine is supposed to run very poorly. (In fact, it sometimes does and sometimes doesn't.

The question is whether you can pass a MOT with the new resistor. One thing for sure, if the cat is original, it's effectiveness ceased years ago. Yet you did PASS the MOT!

I would take a chance on a not cat pipe and remove the cat. If you have engine problems, your first back up would be a non-cat tune resistor. They cost about 15 quid and minutes to install. Get it from a knowledgeable LR aftermarket specialist.

All Ive done is de-cat ,blank e.g.r ,new turbo hoses [old one split]cleaned intercooler and genuine Landrover air filter.Last full tank fuel'. I got 436 miles before low fuel light came on.Worked out 24.4 m.p.g.That was including pulling 1200 k.g caravan with four bikes on roof 230 miles to wales and back dont think thats to bad considering some people get less than that just driving about.:eek:
