I work for a carbon fiber company. I am trying to convince the company to make defender parts out of carbon fiber (with the pattern). I want to see what interest the people here have about it. I am looking into getting the company to make carbon fiber wings, rear door, side skirts, spotlight racks, bonnets and anything else that people suggest to me on here. In the next few weeks i can get general pricing on items are that recommended the most by you! Carbon fiber does not rust or decompose in any way. for non structural parts of the defender Carbon fiber parts can be made that are lighter and stronger than the original metal parts. Getting these defender parts made is not for my benefit. I drive a defender and i think if the price is affordable, i would buy parts myself.
With the defender being discontinued i think carbon fiber can make a massive improvement to a defender as carbon fiber parts will look the same and maintain the same strength indefinably.
Give me your input!
Give me the parts you would like to see in carbon fiber and would buy!

Before you even think about selling as a company here you need to PM accywingy and ask about terms for sponsoring the forum
 
Front wings please. Provided they are strong enough to stand and sit on, heat resistant to mugs of tea and cost about the same as a good pair of second hand originals.
 
Well made, well fitting, look same as stock, Carbon Fibre push button front doors would be good. At a reasonable price.

I havent mentioned a company name or offered to sell them here, i just want research. I only work at this company, the idea is mine since ive been working there. This is not promotion as it could also be general question by any persons.
 
I am not sure of the benefits.
I assume that you are in the USA, because of your mis-spelling of "fibre".
Transport costs would be high, on top of a high cost component. I doubt if you can make CF doors and bonnet for a similar price to new LR parts, let alone 2nd hand.
Although some components would be beneficial, those that are likely to suffer structural damage like wings, cannot be repaired. Buying new would be prohibitive.

What would typical prices be for a bonnet and doors?

Sounds like a bit of a waste of time and money tbh. Steel and alloy construction lasts fairly well, no great hardship to replace/restore assemblies after twenty years or so.
Weight saving isn't a huge concern with landies, many owners bolt on several hundredweight of extras as soon as they buy the vehicle. Its not a formula 1 car, its an off-road/ working vehicle.
 
i think you would sell plenty of carbon 'fiber' bling tat to the people that never off road and just take their kids to school in one and live in london.

in the real world not sure it would be that advantageous. if i dong my wing on a lane it pushes out or looks cool dented. if i donked a 'fiber' one it would crack and look ****e.

I can only talk for myself and it would be a strait no. Unless it was structural and actually improved something it would just be some bling that doesn't belong on a Fender.

That said I wouldn't touch any of that alloy crap that seems to sell well (bar the door hinges - they are a nice bit of engineering). Then again, if people would buy an alloy replacement for the wing air intake maybe that type of driver would buy CF stuff? Tarts...

I am reviving this thread as carbon fibre doors and dashboard would be my preference.

A consideration not mentioned so far is sound damping and security, which for the doors would be as much as an advantage if not more, than them not rotting, as they should not drum vibrate like metal ones, and may not be easy to bend down the frame at top if built well. Additionally as well as mould in extra security to stop the doors being pinches by undoing hinges. if we add water not pouring into them... ;)

The dashboard could also do some sound proofing? but just by not being brittle plastic ****e is worth it for me, the metal ones seem even worse to me.

Well pointed out on it not being suitable for wings, or pretty much anything exposed to frontal impct on trail, as cracked wings would look really bad, the bonnet however may algo have sound deadening benefits?

Ditto seat boxes and vibration?

I have not yet had the pleasure of inspecting where the alloy frame meets steel chassis, but if there is a tub that could be made to make the thing safer in an accident, like some modern sports cars, am sure many would be all ears, even if it is just the coffee swilling southern softies as mentioned here ;)

Yeah, what he said. Fine for the London ****ers but for people who actually use it of no use. You might be better off focusing on interior parts, maybe a dash upgrade and the like, easier to make and more likely to sell. Wrong car for carbon in my mind.
 
Not to put too fine a point on it, but have a read of the forum and the OP ... He hasn't posted for four years. I sincerely doubt he's been sat inside beavering away to suddenly unleash loads of Carbon Fibre tat that has a limited appeal and market ...
 
It'd have to be a feckin' good spoiler, 'nothing' keeps a tratters rear end stable ... 'cept a planted right foot. 'Never let off'
