It is definitely worse when adding power on small to large inclines, releasing the pedal removed the problem, but of course I don't go up the hill.

Currently there is no prop shaft installed, and the problem is still present.

well then its almost certainly an out of balance drive shaft caused by a worn CV or UJ in the front axle area.

it might be a dead engine mount as well, but that's easy to check. Is the vibration more speed or RPM related?
 
I am getting a new set of tyres soon, to see. but then will plan to change the left and right mounts, i am feling the mounts more, sometimes cant figure if it from the front or the back. I dont think to get to the drive shafts unless this doesnt work.
 
I had a similar problem with vibration at low speed and when turning checked just about everything renewed most everything . chating about it in pub and a guy sitting close gave me some advice , he asked me how old the tyres were and what brand( they were michelin ) then said he suspected that even though they were more than legal that the tread was delaminating from the underlying belt . Cut a long story short thats what was happening the actual tread was moving side to side on the belt when turning and was lifting from the radial belt in a straight line at low speed,
 
That's the next thing, tyres.

I put the prop-shaft back on after replacing the VCU carrier bearings(95% sure its all back the same as when it came apart) , and now about 50KMh the car shakes, I have noticed on a left turn whilst with power it stops shaking, not so on a right turn.

The tyres are tread depth legal, but look old on the side walls, so they are to be changed very soon.
 
Hi All, so with a new set of tyres, the fault seems to be more constant, above 80kmh there is the shake, so far havent been much above that. due to my next post, problem
 
I had a real bad vibration after working at the VCU and fixed it by rotating the damper one hole. Not sure why it made such a difference but before I turned it the vibration was terrible and worst at around 60mph.
 
I'm assuming your vcu has a damper. If so it is held on by three bolts. I took them out, rotated the damper one hole and put them back in.
 
This sounds like a "death wobble", a small amount of play will rsult in increased side loading on the steering, at a certain speed the vibration will hit 1st mode of the natural frequency (resonance) and be amplified to the point of causing the whole vehicle to shake violently.

If a freelander has them, it'll likely be the panhard rod bushes that's generating the play, it will be well worth checking all of your steering joints as well for damage as a result.
