I know this may to some be silly question. But why oh why would anyone want to put a computer in their Range Rover?

thats right it is a silly question!!!

the answer, not so silly, is because it replaces the stereo and updates the in car entertainment system to include sat nav, tv, web browsing and basically whatever you want at a fraction of the price of linking it all up with car stereo made add ons

as gav has hinted you will need to remove the centre dash switch panel. the 7" monitor will fit behind if you cut the back of the little cubby hole off that is what i did to install one in my dash for a dvd player & reversing camera :) but i guess it depends on the model of screen

Been thinking about this recently for my Disco one. But no cash and no idea what I'm doing. Would like a screen to replace the cup holders as could have memory map (os software) running on the screen as it would be easier to change/alter routes than on a little PDA and easier to follow to because of the much bigger screen.

There is also the whole media thing that could be a great advantage but where would the pc/tiny laptop go?

Would be worried about having something like that under the seat as it could get wet when playing in the mud and puddles.

Looking good mate, well done

I set up a car pc, but instead of going to expensive route of getting a dedicated computer i just bought a 7' touch screen monitor, and hooked it up to my Asus Eee PC Seashell netbook.

let me know what you think.

I reckon a 6.1" or max 6.2" will fit. I am thinking of doing something similar to replace the nav system. I havent found an android or ipad mini app to do the job.

I use a 7" Android tablet in the car, does Nav, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G phone and loads of Apps.

That sounds good. Have you also found any apps that interface via Bluetooth with the OBD to display data like turbo boost, could even show live fuel burn (mpg) which would be useful for those that don't have the trip computer.

(As for the snipers - so what if the thread is resurrected. It's still relevant. I have to get 50 posts before being able to start a thread. They aren't going to be 50 irrelevant comments)

There are torque apps, speed apps and loads of other things, however, given the sensitivity of P38 electronics, I would be reluctant to use a Bluetooth OBD connector, the owners handbook even warns that a mobile phone may interfear. The Tablet I use is a Sanei N79, about £70 on Ebay, the GPS function seems pretty good and it comes with Google mapping, it seems to have full Nav directions facility but I don't use it for that.

Id be interested in seeing pics of fitted aftermarket screens
Its somthing ive thought about many times but want something that looks standard

Not sure about the legality, or if it would interfere with what may be below, but always thought the top of the dash would be a good spot for a screen (where the depression for the non slip mat is). Would be very handy for sat nav. Some sort of hinge arrangement to hold it up/down would be needed.

That's the puppy. Would definitely need to bigger and neatly cut in so it didn't look like the afterthought it is. Is there much room beneath?
