hi all me again to day we too our disco to take the caravan out we got 1 mile before the car went in to the red and steam was coming for side we opened the bonnett and the expansion tank was bubbling well fro a good while the rad did not seem warm all pipes were soft with water in them as said before this prob started when we towed the caravan and it started to over heat we did have to fill rad with 10 ltrs of water but it seem to have no other signs of the haed gasket gone the is no oil in water or oil does not seem milky it is not using water or nor is the oil going down there is no white smoke just the usual black bit now and then we have no water in foot wells so heater matrix is not leaking what should we do any other ideas other then the head gasket :confused::confused:

So did you get the head looked at then

10 ltrs of water is a huge loss!! The first thing I would be doing is emptying out all of that water, flushing the radiator and the engine block and then replacing it with proper coolant. Make sure you get all the air out!!!

Then start the engine and see if there are any bubbles coming into the header tank, if there are, it could be just air in the system or it could be exhaust gases from a blown headgasket. Get a garage to "sniff" the header tank with a sensor probe - if there are any exhaust gases the gasket is dead.

had a chap to look and he looked in oil ect and told us to by passs heatermatrix but as say we only got 1 mile and it hit red and the expansion tank was bubbling like mad and water was coming out with lid on

there is no bubbles at all from expansoin tank at all nor is it throwing any water out when start it the rad did not seem warm to touch at all tooo

yes we have we put rad flush in it then filled it up from rad to therma stat then headda tank it the still went up it normal sit in middle we have not towed for about a year but it did not move form middle when had a heavy caravan it seem to be starting to creep when we are going about 70mph but last night it went neasrly in to red at 55mph and when i check there was no water in headda tank i had but it in to around half way but need to top upp aging threw there as it was low the rad is ok

I believe this was the start of your problem, over heating the engine by driving too quickly when towing.

how can i be driving to quick when towing caravan i change gear when get to 2thou on rev counter through ever change

Your only supposed to be going 60 tops, but aside from the legal aspect you're straining the engine ;)

yes i know that i only tow at 55mph anyway as i feel comfortable towing at that speed,we r having a pressure test on wed will this decide what the prob could be or not

the biggest cause ive come across is radiator not cooling all over core you test by feeling across surface when warm ,thermostat can be tested by feeling top hose when hot it will br cold till thermostat opens, over heating while towing is a classic poor rad symptom ,working engine hard while towing is a good thing for your engine if cooling system is good ,new rad £100,nearly every overheating job on 300 has been poor rad

ok thank u what does it mean by the core will it be worth getting the air con fans rigged up so we can put them on two to keep cool? the thermstat hose feels warm most of the time

new rad they fill and empty on same side coolant dropping straight down that side without going across core is finned part of rad it should be hot all over fairly equally but getting cooler towards bottom but never cold when engine hot, towing hard on motorway etc will do your engine good
