Hello not too long ago i changed auto transmission fluid with dexron III(FL 1, 4TD 2.0 diesel 2006 automatic) and whenever i change gears while car is stationary it jerks very noticably…

I didnt notice this before and i dont remember it, i wish to know if anyone knows what problems may cause this or if its damaged beyond repair to the point that its useless to fix(price more than car which was around 1400€, 1200£)

Im asking because im planning to also tune it the future with that roverron box thing and sensor and also other expenses

If this is normal and doesnt affect car then im happy and dont mind🫡🌞
 
First I'd double check the fluid level. There is a strict procedure to follow to get the level correct - warm gear box, engine running, cycle through gears, top up until it weeps out of the level plug hole.

I wouldn't bother with a RonBox. Anecdotal eveidence says it knackers your HP fuel pump. I went through three with a RonBox on!

It's all ok now. Thanks for asking. :) I've set the auto oil level to the correct level, and it's working ok. Done about 50 miles on it making sure it's all ok. It also restarts ok and drives ok when hot too, which is a good sign. LR part no for oil STC50531 for LRN402 Jatco auto oil 1L Drain...

You lost three fuelpumps with that ron/roverbox thing??!

Any other ideas to pump up the horsepower? I really do like the extra power🥲🙄

It's not conclusive but @Arctic2 has info on it.

I fitted a RonBox probably around 2014
  1. Original (assumed) pump replaced May 2016 at roughly 108k
  2. 2016 pump replaced June 2019 at 135k
  3. 2019 pump replaced Feb 2022 at 160k. RonBox removed
  4. 2019 pump still currently fitted, 185k
Remap is your answer I think.

Did you set the auto gearbox oil level with the engine running or off? It should be done when its running on tick over.

Does it change gear ok when driving normally?

It was done with engine off, and may i know what tick over means? Yes it changed normally when driving but i havent driven high speed(high way) yet because im still fixing brakes cuz all the rain so far and work.

I found out the sound was coming from reat brakes… but when i checked shoes compared to new shoes they were practically new on one side…. Im assuming it could be the adjuster thing or something

Also the handbrake is hard to pull up, could this be the case? Anyways im just waiting for opportunity to fix then i will report back
 
Stop driving it. The FL1 jatco auto oil level is set with the engine running, on tick over. Tick over is when the engine is running with your feet off the pedals.

If the engine was off when setting the auto level, then it has been set too low. You risk damaging yer gearbox. DONT drive it like this.

I have driven in total about 3-4 km max after draining and filling aprox 4L transmission fluid, no more i would say. Do you think this would be enough to damage gearbox? Personally im not too worried but im know so knowledgeable to these kind of areas but i like to be hopeful

On a side note, the guys who changed it said it didnt smell too bad or color wasnt bad when they changed it. Idk if previous owner changed it but it was done after 255k km. Maybe they changed it once or a few times or not but overall motor seems to be okay shape i would assume besides the black smoke on acceleration when i drove it home after buying it

You can cause damage if you drive an auto gearbox on low oil. If you get air into the torque converter it will cavitate and cause damage. Depends how low the oil went. Yer not the first to do it.

My FL1 v6 auto leaked. My torque converter was destroyed by low oil in the auto. I didn't know it was leaking.

Sory to hear, didnt know there was a v6 FL1. Is it petrol?

I put it into a main dealer to do the work. £2,200 about 14 years ago. It was too much for me to do at the side of the road. The auto on its own is 84kg. Two ways of getting the auto oft. Turn the engine/auto/ird diagional whilst still fitted. Or remove it all as one lump then seperate on the ground. That's what the garage did. Some years later I removed the engine/auto/ird as one lump. Must be over 300kg. Not easy to move when both trolleys jump out the way when it landed on the road.

First pic is on the left and second one is the right side. I assume the level plug for mine is on the right side(the one with smaller length bolt on outside appearance)?
 
Hi, the level bolt for the Jatco is the one circled in the picture. DO NOT remove any other bolts under there as one of the other bolts holds the reverse band together inside the gearbox (which you then HAVE to take the gearbox out, strip & repair it).

Also remember the engine should be running when checking the level. Once the level is correct, put the level plug back in before shutting the engine off !! Otherwise lots of new fluid will drain back out . . . .
