Hello all Landy peps !

I got my first Disco yesterday after wanting one for ages and ages and im probley being silly but its making a kinda funny noise and i thought that i really should ask before i start to panic to much !

When i change gear it makes a kinda clunk noise ,it seems to happen when the clutch is pushed in or let out ,its quite loud coming from under the car ,mainly in first and second gear.
and the other thing is that it seems to be allmost impossable to get into forth gear ,you can do it with a bit of welly but its not easy ,and it also crunches really loudly when u put it into reverse ?

Im now allmost convinced that ive brought the worst car that was probley for sale in the whole of surrey and have got myself into a right panic ,my hubby said its probly just a landy thing but im not so sure .

Does anybody elces car do this ?

I did have a small test drive and it did make the noise once of twice then but they assured me that it was just slack or something ?

I think i might take it to my local mot station tomorrow to have it checked

Well any ideas /thoughts would be fab ,its k reg by the way and its a 2.0 mpi s if that makes sence !

Hiya you and welcome aboard, you forgot to tell us what model you have sounds like a tdi 200 though, clunk most likely to be from the prop shafts they can be greased at the spicer joints, that helps but if they're really tired they may need replacing...hard to get gears tricky one someone will advise you on that, could be clutch adjustment but remember land rover gearboxes are big and heavy they change gear slowly it maybe you just need to get use to it...good luck keep us posted...:)

Oh sorry guys i diddnt say silly me its a mpi according to the paper work , i havnt got a clue about them sorry lol
Thankyou for all the ideas so far ,im starting to feel a little more confident about the whole thing .
I think you might be right about the changing gear slowly aswell that does seem to help abit .

Never mind eh?! :D

Gearbox - could be anything, one of my disco's clunked a bit, was just slack in the system - most of them are like that after a few years. As for getting it into fourth, could be you getting used to it, could be the gearbox. I do recall that my P38 was almost impossible to get into 5th when I bought it, but after a few days I had no problems at all. I completely forgot about it until my dad drove it and told me he couldn't get it into 5th! Best advice is probably to drive it around a while and see how it pans out.

Hi rblady
The clunking noise is probably a worn gearbox main shaft which is usually a common thing in older landrovers and discos of this sort of age (mine is a R reg and does, My last one was a defender on a L plate and that did it) its certainly not uncommon and depending on the mileage and how its been driven in the past isn't really a problem! You also say there is a problem with selecting 4th, i have never had a problen with either my defender or discovery wether driveing fast or slow, rushing the gears or not especially on the higher gears! When waqs it last serviced? It could be that the oil requires renewing or that the wrong grade has been added because alot of normal garages dont know which oil to put in landrover gearboxes
hope to have been of some help Graham

That does seem to be common. Most of the time the noise is the slack thru the drivetrain. A most certain thing to check would be your driveshafts for wear on U-joints or Rotoflex if it has that. Even on an Automatic if you let off the pedal quickly and then accelerate, you hear a clunk in most cases. Shifting gears will get easier with time for sure !

Happy Rovering and Congrats on the new Landy !:)

:( Well been to my garage this morning and the out look is very bad .

Theres loads of wear in the gear box and transverse box ,and second syncho is mullerd also new clutch ect ect rolling up to £1500 +vat !

Im soo gutted i dont see how people can rip peps off like that , i even questioned it in the garage ,but they kept on saying that it was fine ?

Well im of to get onto trading standerds to see if im can get my money back .

:( thanks for all the ideas tho
Daniella :(

Daniella,

Did you get any warranty with the vehicle? How long ago did you buy it - was it only a couple of days ago? You might be able to take it back and demand your money back as it is unfit for purpose or something like that. Have a search on Google for consumer rights, specifically related to vehicle sales. Make sure whatever you do is backed up in *writing* to the garage, sent Recorded Delivery so they can't deny receiving your letters.

HOWEVER - Check the bill of sale they gave you and read (carefully) what it says on there about the conditions of sale.

Trading Standards are about as much use as a Mountain Goat in London - but you never know, you might managed to speak to someone there who actually cares and will do something to help.

Good luck, hope you get something sorted.

Hay and thanks for that
My hubby has called trading standerds and there saying it is coverd by the sale of goods act as amended 1979 ,so were waiting now on the garage ,where i brought it from calling me back to see what there prepaired to do .
When we went to see the cart ,we had a look and a little drive ,where i mentioned several times the noise but they kept saying it was just slack or something and that it was fine .We were also told there was a 6 month engien and gearbox warrenty .
We made them an offer on the car and that was agreed ,so we went across to my bank to get out funds to pay for the car , however while we were at the bank ,one of the showroom people came across to us saying that they had got it wrong there was no warrenty and we would only get that on paying full asdking price for the car ,but as a good will gesture they were prepaird to put an 3 month engien warrenty as it was the salesmans mistake , now stupidly we agreed to this and brought the car
and here we are now .
It was the 25th of this month that i brought the car so ive only had it two days !

As I understand it, they are duty bound to inform you of any problems with the vehicle. The only time they are not is when you have had your own (pre delivery) inspection. As you mentioned the problem, and they denied anything was wrong it only serves to strengthen your case becuase you made them aware that there was an issue with the gearbox. The fact that they chose to lie to you about it can only make things worse for them. The least they should have done was to have it inspected, and if it turned out to be serious (as it was) they are legally bound to tell you about the problem - probably why they didn't!

Sounds like you have a strong case, but whether they will do anything is another matter. I would go around to speak to them about it, say you have been in touch with TS and they advised you it was covered under the SOG act and you either want them to repair the gearbox as there was clearly a major problem they did not inform you of before purchase, or you want a full refund. If they don't respond positively then I would put it in writing giving them a time-frame to respond. If they fail to do so, it won't cost you more than around £100 to take them to the small claims court. Issuing the summons might be enough to get them to do something. In my experience of the courts, district judges are very sympathetic to customers and less so to small businesses - especially garages when it comes to this sort of thing! However, you need to make sure you followed all the right procedures before approaching the court. Plenty of information online.

Depending on how much you paid for the vehicle, it might be wise to settle for an offer of a certain percentage towards the repairs rather than go through the hassle (and time frame) of court proceedings. Depends on your circumstances I guess.

Ok got a bit of news for you
We spoke to the garage and at first they were very shirty ,mentioning solisitors ect ect and saying that theres nothing at all wrong with the car !
Well now there coming down a bit ,the latest idea is that i pay them £95 for a warrenty ,then they take the car and fix it , i have said that i will want a independent inspection after to check the work tho as there doing it at there own garage .
So as it stands right now its booked into there garage on monday and i have to fork out another £95 but i suppose its better than taking them to court for my money back !

Be carefull, warrenty does not cover fair wear and tear, worn shafts and clutch are not covered. I'd still push VERY hard for my money back. Certainly ask for assurance in writting that you will not be expected to pay any more than the £95!

If you end up with issues, not not repair a Mpi they are underpowered for a Disco sell it on (I recomend ebay with almost no detail, let people test drive or bid blind, it's not nice but it is fair). If your happy to spend £1000+ on repairs then IMHO take this money and invest in a better base vehicle!

Ok well ive spoken to quite a few people today and got some more advice.

Ive decided NOT to pay to £95 warrenty ,i dont see why i should ,i brought my car to go to the stables ect ect and obviously my cars not going to be ok with that ,so ive insisted they fix my car ,with no further payment from myself .

Ive also asked for a written specification of all work carried out and for the work itself to be garented and advised them that i will have a garage of my choice check the car after ,to insure the work is carried out .

So its going in on monday so i can only wait and see now what happens !
I could still push for my money back but im worried i might get stung again and end up in even more mess than i am now ,and apart from the gearbox im very happy with my new car .

Ill let you all know how it ends up as ive been told there fitting a new gear box ,but lets wait and see.

Hi, I've got a '94 200Tdi 150k miles which makes the clunking noises you're talking about. I get a quiet click when the clutch goes down, another one when the gear goes in and then a big one when the clutch comes out again (the faster it comes out, the bigger the clunk). All these are intermittent and are worst when going 1st - 2nd up a hill.

All my prop shaft joints are fine (replaced a loose one a few weeks ago and made no difference to clunking).

I think it is wear in the transfer box but can't be arsed to take it to a garage to find out for sure. As far as I know (I hope!), it will go on for a long time like this before it needs to be overhauled.

My gearbox is ok I think but it sounds like yours is knackard so the garage should fix that at least. I'd be interested to know if that cures the clunking.

Good luck getting it sorted.

Hello

Sorry to hear of all your troubes !!!!!!

Im a lawyer and a lot of my time is taken up with the local county court.

If you need any advice (free of charge ) then please feel free to contact me and i will try and do all i can to help.

Regards.

PS. Im very good at sorting out the motor trade !!!!!! Ask Radicalrabbit !!!!!!:D

wow, you really did draw the short straw, if i were you i would take retsy's advice and see if you can get your money back. the car you bought is a 2.0mpi, which is the worst disco ever made. you state its to go to the stables so i sense you have horses, so if you intend to pull a horsebox you will fail miserably with a 2 litre mpi.push to get your money back then find yourself a diesel. hope this helps ;)

Hi All, well, I'm RBLady's hubby, Paul. Must admit it's partly my fault all of this, I've had a series 3 109 safari & a series 2a 88 so just thought the clunkyness & reluctance to go into gears was a landy 'feature' that carried on into the disco's.
Story at this point is that the garage have mucked us about again & again & now after much threatening have agreed to give us our money back - sort of.....finally agreed that they will give us all of our money back but not in cash!, at first wanted to do a bank transfer saying it would take 2 days (which would mean they have the car & the money & all docs, dont like that idea!) or when I drop off the docs they will give me a bankers draught. I'm not going to go into all of the ins & outs of the whole thing ( that would make this a very long thread!!) but I will say that if you ever hear of anyone contemplating dealing with Squires Prestige in Cheam - Surrey my advice would be to run considerably more than a mile. In our experience they have given cowboys a bad name!
Had a look at a disco last night, an N reg 3.9 v8i. Seems to be a lovely car, only drawback is it's an auto, but body's good, chassis has no rust, no rust on doors, sills, etc, has steps all round, 1/2 leather, aircon and 97k on the clock so we put a deposit on it.
Oh yeah, the parting shot from Squires when we told them we werent happy about things - 'well you could always just leave it' - as they have the car & havent yet given us our money I think what they meant was just forget about your money too! what nice chappies ;-)
