In my 300tdi, the battery always seemed to be on its last legs, even when replaced. So when I went to the Dales in it over years at Christmas I always took a spare battery fully charged and a set of jump leads.
It always started but sometimes only just. But It gave me a little bit of confidence having it strapped in the back, even though i never quite needed to use it.
 
The beauty of these lithium jump starters is that they will fit in an average glove box. Mine takes up less room than a pair of jump cables. It also has a built in flash light and a compass, I'm not sure why it has a compass but it has. Also you can use it to recharge a mobile phone.

Nope. I just use lead acid. At about 100 quid a battery, and bearing in mind I have seven, it is already over 700 quid a set.
And I don't find they are a problem, I rarely run them down below 90%, if I want serious power I just put the generator on, or do stuff while we are on the move.
The batteries I have have lasted three and a half years, and are still coming up full power on the displays. I am confident they will go on another few years.
Another advantage of lead acid is that they have a good resale value, when they are tired out, I will get at least a tenner each for them.
The acid is actually worth more than the metals on recycle value these days.

If it's just to keep for emergency starting, then avoid the lithium battery types, and go for the traditional lead acid types.

Lithium batteries have a higher cycle life, but much lower standby life, if left fully charged or fully discharged. Lithium batteries like to be kept at a storage charge, which is equal to a 50% state of charge.

Lead acid batteries can be, or more accurately must be kept fully charged. As such it's always ready for use when needed. If kept fully charged, then lead acid will last a decade or more.
 
I got one from lidl about four five months ago for like £50 charged it and haven't used it and haven't even read the instructions yet lol
