Hi guys, I'm new to the forum as I recently bought a 2006 Freelander 1.8 petrol! I absolutely love the car but I had a total disaster last week.

The exhaust manifold split and so I brought it to a local First Stop garage to see what they could do! They said they would replace the manifold so happy days...

The next day I was driving and all was well.... the battery light came on and off and dimmed and brightened and then suddenly the car died! Turns out they didnt reinstall the heat shield over the manifold and melted the alternator cable to the manifold... disaster!

The car is back with them and they have accepted blame. They currently cant get the car to start. When you turn on the ignition the dash lights up but the temp gauge goes straight to max and the red light comes on. Then when you turn the key again a quiet click is head from somewhere in under the steering wheel. Also the radio wont come on.

I'm hoping the garage will fix it but confidence levels are not high!

Any electrical whizzes here??

I expect its taken out one of the main fuses.

Once it's fixed, don't use that garage again, as they're obviously clueless about how a vehicle work.

Funny you should say that because I always do all my own work and decided to go with a garage for the first time in 7 or so years and that's what happens!!

Lesson learned then! Sadly! :(
A garage cost us £1500 recently and just made the problem worse, on a non-standard, non-LR vehicle. I will have to sort the problem out myself when I get the time and space. This is what happens when wifey gets impatient!

Only the way Nodge works on cars! ;)
Seriously though, it can be hard to find a GOOD garage, with a skilled and conscientious mechanic. If a garage is full of slapdash hammer monkeys, any decent mechanic would get discouraged and leave.

Cant really help you with your problem...

Ive worked in garages for 35years and theres not a lot I cant fix. Theres guys that worked in the Ford main dealer with me and theres no way Id let them even drive something of mine :)

Thankfully I no longer work in the motor trade :) I do know a lot of "technicians" and you could count all the ones Id let near anything of mine on 1 hand :)

There are a few good guy out there but they DONT work in tyre places :)
