something that has always interested me

of how the defender and discovery compare off road

always thought of the defender being thee land rover icon

just wondered what the general consensus is please

going to the lz 13 event and am really keen to see what this d3 is like off road

last time being in a hippo , will be an interesting event, to see if i can indeed this time keep up with the big boys in my D 3

IMO the D3/4 is very capable off road, more capable than others without any mods and on A/T tyres, the TC and terrain response is brilliant on them... see "discovery 3 off road" on youtube one example

Definitive comparisons between vehicle types is difficult since so often the off-roading capability can be down to the experience and abilities of the driver as much as anything else.

I would agree there on experience of the driver. A farmer would have more knowledge in a basic vehicle equip to handle his terrain, than a bog standard driver with all the bells and whistles traipsing across his boggy field. As you see in the average LR Magazines or videos they are planned route with the purpose of howto get out of jail.
Frankly the best knowledge is not to get yourself into the trouble in the first place but know howto get out of it safely.

cheers for the replies

i've found over the years in learning when i've got stuck and why

have never been worried in using the landy rover in the sense of not using it gingerly like i've seen so many times

half the battle is all about reading the terrain ahead

however have never been worried about getting stuck, all the fun,

always made sure though that in not going off road on my own , always better that way

From what I've seen, the disco 3 is crazy capable, not stopping moving somehow when every assumption says it shouldn't still be moving, you often see them tested off road with only road tyres on, so with any better tyres they only improve, disco vs defender, older at least, I think is just about clearance and angles! Maybe weight differences too...

will be interesting to see what it will do, every land rover i've owned have always taken it to the limit in its capabilities

got some cooper at3 tyres fitted ,

like to see how it reacts off road according to settings etc, weight on high banking , sliding the back end through mud and over steering etc

Will be unstoppable! Disco 3 at lz12 wofted over everything, would be worth taking to a quarry

will be good to see what it will do, got to wait until i find some non scratchy lanes, makes me sound a right stuck up git, just don't want to ruin the paintwork

when lz13 comes up , fingers crossed there may be somewhere i can see what this will do

never have faith until i see for myself how it copes with different terrain

The trip to Salisbury plain will be a good chance to get it dirty. Nice and open.

Cheers

There the choice between scratchy and scratch less routes, but I think youd have to go for it on a tough lane to push the disco :p someone who rents a unit on me farms just bought a 14 D4 HSE, wants to take it out for some fun but there's always the odd tree, its not what's under you, so maybe theres a solution to it? Might be worth looking at how to protect ur paint temporarily for the odd trip, wrap it in industrial parcel wrap ;)

don't worry i've been looking forward to that ,

big time , with it being so open can give the disco a good seeing to, letting it rip ,

mine is booked in for the 24th feb , for all the belts, water pump, aux belt oil pump etc to be replaced

already got a new air tank and reservoir valve block to fit

am really looking forward to that trip , watched the videos and looks awesome

don't get me wrong, i don't mind a bush etc going down the side, it's when u get a hawthorne etc that takes it down to the metal that i wish to avoid

not worried about deep ruts etc , if it gets stuck then so be it, that's all part of the fun

as i used a hippo last time it would just be great to see how they compare when really pushed off road

also having the comfort of knowing it doesn't matter as i won't be on my own , so can easily get pulled out

Don't worry Gary I'l pull you out with mi D1 if you get stuck!:rolleyes::p
IF we get there !:(

that's all part of the fun getting stuck, wouldn't be worried in the least , i always find it funny

will be bringing my camera so can easily spend the day being a gate bi atch

in all honesty and putting my hands up it's going to be the 25th that i will seriously struggle with

that was the day i lost my wife and been tormenting myself if i can either be at home or at the lz13 event

did also wonder if there was an obstacle course could be set up, for every model, but most importantly about fun

for it not to turn into a competition but a great laugh

maybe having some cones , then into mud , onto ruts etc to see who can get through it, all about having a laugh

Very sorry to hear that matey, am sure it would be great to be doing something positive on that day, if you don't mind me saying :)
The obstacle course would be awesome, long as its somewhere we can make a mess of the ground!

cheers mate , hate my own company, suppose it would be really boring if i spent the day on my own whilst driving off road, doubt i'm the only one

yes would be great ref the obstacle course, having all the different models

having it set up with different difficulties , nothing serious just a good laugh

maybe having one bit to see who can get through it without getting stuck, then some cones to go through , making sure theres nothing to damage underneath etc , not having it as a competition nor a winner or loser , just good fun

good photographic opportunities

not sounding disrespectful in any way , fully understand some of the lanes are scratchy so suppose seeing if something could be organised for others who are at a loose end on the saturday

or maybe a small section of lane that could be used

hope it doesn't come across rude to the organisers , just an idea for everyone to enjoy , also maybe some of the grown up kids could have a go , there first time driving off road

at the end of the day i take my hat off to the organisation ref this event and all the hard work that is done
