ive never seen or heard of a std oneCan anyone tell me what model Land Rover (circa 1969) had canvas side door windows (with zip openings)?
have you driven it ,more than a few miles, here a decent 88 could fetch 2.5k if it was mint, i run a d2 it does need regular looking after but most is diyOK.... I have a 2001 Discovery TD5, recently purchased and already having the usual troubles... ECU, injectors, misfire, clutch, and so on.... and from what I have read on some fora I am worried that this expenditure will continue. My local mechanic here in Kenya, has a restored Series II 88 1969.... almost original but with some modifications (such as canvas door windows mentioned in my earlier post, spare wheel mounted on the rear door, electric fan on the roof in the interior, electronic distributor).
My Discovery was purchased for $5000 USD and I have spent just over $1000 on repairs. The mechanic wants to do a trade with his 88... withme topping up some cash of around $1000 (I am negotiating this!). However, I am tempted because the 88 looks great, with a great paint job, twin jerrycans and hi-lift jack mounted at the rear, wooden dash, fuse box and glove box, full engine rebuild, etc. But I need some advice please! I love the Disco and it is a great, smooth drive with plenty of power and style. Does anyone out there think that the value of the 88 would make it worth the trade? What is a almost original restored 1969 SII 88 worth, roughly? Please help!
Chassis seems OK Neilly. It has a crack below the driver's door that has been welded, but otherwise seems fine. I have only had it a couple of months, but here in Kenya I might only do around 100 km in a month, over bad roads... and once every 6 weeks or so, a 400 km drive to Entebbe, Uganda, mainly over good hardtop roads, at speeds of up to 80 - 100 kph on the open road.what condition is your TD5 chassis in?
What sort of mileage do you do? long distance? high speed?
Cheers
have you looked at the injector loom connector ,and a hawkeye or other diy diagnostic device is vitalYeah, since I bought in in late May in Entebbe, Uganda... I have been to Kenya and back to Uganda then back to Kenya (about 1,200 km covered). When it is running well, it is like a dream to drive... fast, great acceleration with the turbo, comfortable seats and interior, good consumption (11 - 12km per liter)... but I am starting to get these electronic problems; especially with sensors and injectors, "hunting" and misfires at low revs, central locking not working, and warning lights on the dash for no reason. Worried that I will never stop spending!
My thoughts exactly....Thanks John.Think you should try driving the series before deciding. It's much slower and will give a worse ride on bad surfaces. There's a price to pay for simple technology.
Oh!If only I had the money, mate!Keep the D2, and buy the S2?
