we just had a mechanic install a recon engine in our 51 reg 1800 cc freelander and a new clutch kit... when changing gear with no engine running it works,.. but when the engine is running it wont select a gear ??

whats wrong ??

the clutch feels good when no ignition ... ... but when the engine is running it feels like its doing nothing much

CONFUSED

it's a clutch problem m8, with no engine running you should be able to get gears. get the mechanic back and tell him to get it sorted. could be something as simple as air in the system.

It does select gear when NO engine... its just when engine is live it cant do it

Yep, what gegs is saying it's normal when you have a clutch clearance issue for it to go into gear with engine off because nothing in the gearbox is turning but when the engine is running if the clutch won't disengage effectively then gearbox internals are turning so you can't select a gear.

You need to be having a word with the guy thats just fitted the engine, did he return the car to you with it like that? Surely he should have noticed the fault?

Its not been returned yet... he still got it.. but cant work out why it wont engage

He fitted a re-con engine.. and clutch and master and slave cylinder... and now this problem

I had exactly same problem with the Vectra (almost identical slave cylinder/release bearing set up).

I ended up using a pressure brake bleeding system to bleed it.

The reason you get a "pedal" is due to the tension on the slave cylinder.

Make sure the master cylinder is filled to the top before you start the bleeding process.

You could pump up the pedal, then release the bleed nipple a bit, but do it over & over & over til the air is expelled.

Not mechanics fault, just **** luck  it happens.

Brilliant.. sounds exactly like that .. ill phone him in the morning

P.s ... iv got a vectra too ... Vectra C 1.8 life 07 reg... just doin a body mod now to look like a VXR

Thank you

well, tried that but no luck.. seems the new master and slave is sealed and the old one was doin the same when that was still on yest'

maybe a dodgy new clutch ?

Ah so the "mechanic" doesn't know what's wrong

Was it like this before changing the engine?
Is the clutch cross shaft free?
Is the slave bracket bending when the clutch is operated?

If not it's clutch out again.

It's possible he's put the plate in back to front

I have seen that before, but with the DMF it would take a monumentaly stupid person to not notice

Mind you, there'd be noise.

I can't understand that there is a "pedal", but no clutch action.

Sounds like the chap suggested.....box off again.

For reference, the clutch plate should be flat bit against the DMF and the sticky out bit towards the cover plate :p

Hi, on my TD4 I have replaced the pressure plate, clutch plate and the concentric slave. the issue I had when all back together was usual pedal issues, tried the bleeding but no good. New master now fitted, bled good pedal but when engine running its a bugga to grab a gear. I got reverse to get her off the ramps but she don't like grabbing anymore. My gut says its a bleeding issue. I am having it pressure bled later on in the week so I hope that fixes it. any other ideas guy's
Cheers
Andy

It's a bleeding issue, I had the same with my Discovery, re-fitting genuine landrover master Slave sorted it, as it was leaking letting in air. Ended up with a new bearing, Slave and master.
