Just bought a new aerial and mounted it on back of fender over window. fitted as per instuctions, run an earth to roof bolt. SWR still just on red, assumed its the earth so ran one to back door hinge bolt to check still no good. where should i run the earth from aerial too. and does the CB have to be earthed.

What type and size of aerial?

Are you trying to get a reading near a building?

Roof should be fine so long as it's clean ali though chassis might be better, cb itself doesn't need earthing other than the lecky connections.

Check the leads for no continuity or dead short as this will kit cb-check with cheap digital multi meter

90 CM stinger, done well away from any buildings. so if i run an earth to the chassis and still dont get it down is the cb fecked.Is there a way i can tell if it is the cb.

what mount?? Gutter mounts are notoriously bad because LR had to stuff them full of sealant to stop water from getting in thru the seams. If gutter mounts then scrape away the sealant from beneath the mounting.

check that there is no continuity between coax cable, sheathing and the inner core. and check that there is no continiuity between inner core of coax and body of CB. Once you've confirmed that the coax int shorting everything else is down to poor positioning/earthing of aerial. wrong aerial wavelength and fooked CB.

OH and try a different SWR meter you'd be surprised how many are fooked.

inner and outer parts of cable should not be connected so put meter on buzzer setting to check for circuit on cable should not buzz, check the set on channel 1 and 40 see if any different, where is the coil on the ariel is it above the roof line if not can cause this problem as signal bounces back give me a call if you want another SWR meter around on Monday if you want

Thanks james, it a new aerial so it should be fine. think i have a meter some where , if i get time monday will give you a call. Got the compressor sited, put it under the oil tank in the garden so its out the way and under cover, all i got to do now is sort out getting it wired and plumbed in to the garage.

Just a point but I wouldn't assume that just because it is new it is ok, it will be worth checking that there is no direct short in the aerial between the inner and outer part of the aerial connector.

I also had that with a new lead, also had a springer ariel with the coil at base which was lower than roofline could not get SWR out of red changed it to top loaded fibreglass airel and SWR dropped to around 1.5
