Hi

I am very confused with part numbers. I owned a 1995 4.6 HSE P38A and I want to get Range Rover Break Booster (The thingy with the Break Fluid tank on top of it) as a spare part just in case something awful happen.

No my question is which part will fit my car since I can find four different part number for the P38 including the

STC2778
STC2779
ANR2238
ANR2239

So which one should I take for my car? I am sure that above I should find a 2 Wheel TC and 4 Wheel TC version as well as a Diesel one... Correct?

It's called the brake modulator, a bloody expensive spare part, and it's repairable.
 
It depends on whether your car has traction control. On your year of car it can have it or not have it. Booster with traction control STC2778 without TC STC2779.
 
My Car has TC, I experienced it first time on snow, so it must be the STC2778 then! Thanks!

And YES this part is bloody expensive and almost impossible to get.

I have been warmed that I MAY have to get a new one at some point... So I prefer to store one before it is impossible to get. But I found a company in the UK that seems to rebuild them and sell rebuilt one so will get one ASAP.
 
I must be really unlucky... So I contacted the company in order to get these part as "rebuild"and I have been told that they do not have any available. Asked them if I can send them one and rebuild it for me, and they said :

Sorry we cannot help in this matter.

So I am not sure if they don't want help since they can no longer do such work, depsite advertising on their website or simply because they don't want to bother with someone outside of the UK and/or EU.

So does anyone has an idea on who can rebuilt such part and who should I contact?

PS 4x4 Island (Very nice by the way) quoted it at 1500£
 
Yeah £1500 is about right. However as Datatek has said, it is repairable - at least for the most documented fault.

Also I would suggest getting a copy of Microcat the electronic parts catalogue. Its invaluable especially for owners outside the UK (like me). Using your vehicle's unique VIN the software will help you identify the exact part number that is appropriate for your specific car.

Can't remember where I downloaded mine but if you do a search in the forum you're bound to find some links. As a shortcut, the Russkies have bodged up an online version which is pretty good in a pinch and can be accessed from a mobile etc.

Thanks, I am no mechanic so I will not try to repair myself, but I would love to know where should I send one to repair or rebuild.

I will search for the catalog!

They don't fail that often especially the later ones. You could get one from a scrapper, try Emmotts.
UK companies are, in my experience, very reluctant to ship outside the UK, even France scares the sh@t out of them.:mad:

Thanks... I will try.

I am afraid that I will have to change it sooner than later... while driving the car today, my brake pedal was almost not responsive like if there were no fluid (Accumulator and Pump has been tested ok, and break line as well)... I had to give it a second try to get brake. Not too confident in the car at this point !!!! :(

The symptom is as follow, if you drive the car more than 3 or 4 minutes without braking (High-Way, regular road) it will happen. Otherwise in City area it work just fine.

Drove back the car to the garage to check.

Old brake fluid and/or air in the system
 
Update on the situation.

I gave the garage a call and they seems to have located my problem to a dysfunctional "Outlet Valve" located behind or around the Brake Booster/Modulator.

They changed it and will test the car for several hours to see if my problem is solved or not.

PS, I try to seach Google Image to get an idea of what this "Outlet Valve" may look like but did not had any luck, does someone can tell me what this stuff look like and is this the part described in this document ? web.nanocom.it/download/WABCO%20C%20TYPE%20_P38.pdf

Now if you have any good Karma to spare please send your good thoughts toward Japan! (unholy 4x4 sacrifices may also help)

Got a call from the garage and I finally succeed to understand what they were talking about : They apparently changed the "Proportion Valve"

They drove the Car last night, this morning again and will try again later today, so far so good... I am suppose to pick-up my baby tomorrow... (Luckily I left the car to them with a full tank ;-))

Now, any ideas of what this proportion valve is, what it look like and what is its role? (I am just curious)

PS Please keep on continuing sending good Karma in direction to Japan... Just in Case!

Power valve - 3.
The power valve is an extension of the master
cylinder, it controls fluid pressure in the power circuit
in direct proportion to pressure in the master cylinder.
The power valve is of spool valve design.
