Keep looking but also stay aware.
I got a '94 300tdi D1 a few months ago, it has some small rust that i'm not worried about yet, i paid £1800 for it with new MOT, so far i've spent probably £300+ on it just to make it safe and comfy!!
It needed a full service, valves setting, 2nd hand turbo, front downpipe, steering damper, track-rod ends, rear anti-roll bar links, new rear brake pads and oil seals, and other small bits.
Its a lovely to drive now and i wouldn't want to be without her, the first one i looked at "had some small rust holing" - 45 minute drive there and the thing was like swiss cheese! i'm glad i held out.

It would seem that a random love interest has also become involved on this thread. Hope he finds better holes than what I did today

I'm glad you listened to the advice mate and didn't buy it if it was that bad. Good ones are out there you just need to be patient, mine took me a few months to find (2 1/2 years back ) but I haven't looked back since.

that's true mate but if you keep looking you'll find one like I did, new boot floor, new sills, polybushed, waxoyled etc.
I know of a 300 with no rust for not much more spence

You'll find one mate, no probs. You can get a nice car for 800.
As above, you can ignore some problems as cheap fixes, if it's not rotten and it's engine amd gearboxes seem ok (quiet enough, smooth enough) then it'll probably be a good buy.
You can tell by the advert what our gonna get, those guys were obviously complete idiots.

Found a Land Rover Discovery Turbo Diesel 2.5 that I should be putting a Deposit on tomorrow. It's done 180k but comes with a lot of receipts, history etc.
As the title says I'm a complete noob so are discovery's quite modifiable for off roading? what would I need to do to it to take it green laning?

This was a completely unmoded disco when we bought it.
When we sold it 2 yrs later, it had a 4" lift (2" Springs, shocks and 2" solid blocks under the springs), front winch bumper, steering guard, light bar, we cut the wheel arches out and put lager pastic trims on so we could put much bigger wheels/tyres in it. And it was still all perfectly road legal and our day to day vehicle.
Nearly anything is possible, it just depends how far you want to go

Decent tread on ya tyres, front and rear recovery points and diff guards are handy to have
That picture looks spot on! Surley doing that to the wheels must have sent the mpg through the floor? And what about handling too? It does need some tyres as the ones on it look more like the tread on my track bike than something that eats mud.

Im on my second Disco now and learning everyday!! this forum is supurb and helped me loads of times, ive got a 300tdi now, ive done a lot of work on it, i think the secret is to do lots of maintainance and preventative work, a lot of these cars wont have had any work done underneath for years!! dont wait for it to fail somewhere, im overhauling all the susspension bushes, rubbers, ball joints, UJ,s on the props as well as a master service and brake overhall, parts are cheap enough and its good fun getting the big spanners out!, i live in Grantham if you need any advice, im not an expert but i have learned a lot over the last 2 years of Disco ownership.
