Probably a quick one this. But I was gonna decat my Disco but got told I could no longer do this from new MOT laws.

Apparently if your car had a cat it should still have a cat.

So can I or can't I decat?

Or are you guys who have decatted gonna have to go out and buy cats?

If it came from the factory with one then it must be fitted at mot time or it will fail
 
So there's no point in de-catting it then.

So de-cat pipes will now be a thing of the past. Or were some disco's not fitted with them?
 
All I will say is, the guy testing it is unlikely to know if your car came with a cat or not. (mainly older cars and landrovers) Or that the box you have in the exhaust is infact a straight through pipe made to look like a cat......
 
Early Discos should not have had cats - my 2001 Disco 2 td5 did not have one when it left the factory. I gave a local dealer the vin number and they printed off the spec sheet from when she came off the production line. The important item I was looking for was non catalyst. Sorted! :cool:
 
If it's a petrol engine disco 1 or 2 and it left the factory with them fitted then yes, the VIN will give the tester the build spec.
Diesel disco 1 or 2 only have a MOT smoke test and no requirement at the moment to have one fitted.

Not true. Now it's all computerised they can tell from your vin number whether it had a cat or not

sorry but that changed in the latest mot update,

whether its a cat or a dpf is beside the point, if it left the factory with the down pipe with the little box on it, it will need a little box on the down pipe to pass the mot.
 
Will the VIN give all the build info for Jap Imports as well ? (I know they were built here and shipped out). Reason I ask is that my 300tdi passed this week and I fitted a decat pipe last year, not sure if the box was a cat of a dpf but it passed without it.

That's good I've seen that.... but does it apply to D1 & 2s diesels? do they have a Cats/DPF like modern diesels and tested for CO HC ? like petrol, from pictures I've seen they look nothing like modern diesel Cat or DPF, the ones on my wife's 2013 Mercedes are big lumps fitted in the exhaust system there's no doubt what they are.

So if discos have Cats then I feel sorry for the disco owner that have modified there exhaust and now have to return them to there original state.

Gosh! how much would it be if you have to put one in? What we need is a straight through pipe that looks like there's a cat on it and there's the solution.

But MOT stations are sometimes so random. Mine passed last year when I knew there were MOT failures on it. I fixed these anyway. I think if the garage know your going to fix it yourself they don't look so hard to find jobs to do.

Maybe if you have a good relationship with your local garage he might overlook the absence of a cat.

Thank god the disco 1 doesn't have any mad electrics and silly warning lights that many new cars have.;)

yes it does apply, landrover have called it a cat therefore whatever we think it is or is not, the powers that be think its a cat so it now has to be there if originally fitted, some had it some did not.

I suspect there will be de-cat pipes available with a little box welded on the outside available soon.
 
Ok I have a rr p38 4.0 reg 2000 on lpg and no cats .as its on lpg it will not be given a cat test .so must it have cats?

If it's a petrol engine and they are fitted at the factory Yes! and has been since sometime in 2013, even my firms two factory fitted LPG vans have cats as the are also petrol engined.
A cat test is the emissions from the tail pipe LPG vehicle also have an emissions test.

I mentioned this to my guy the other day when talking about the blanked EGR and coil conversion. I asked him about the cat and said they're supposed to have them fitted now and he said make sure you bring it here for an MOT and you'll be ok. Happy days.
