I have a 200tdi and it has been down on power and useing a lot of fuel. After a lot of searching many people are suggesting the lift pump.

What dose it actually do? Also what is the leaver for?

My "leaver" is on the right side of the pump but I have looked a few other pumps and they are on the left? Would this suggest I have the wrong one fitted?

Thanks

The lift pump is driven from the cam shaft and basically pumps fuel from the tank to the inj pump, the inj pump can draw its own fuel but not enough to get full power from the engine.
The hand lever is connected to the operating arm for the diaphragm, if this feels loose/floppy it means the linkage has broken inside the pump itself.
Got all my power back after fitting new pump, not massively better but you can certainly tell.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes my leaver is very loose. I tried running it with the leaver down with no difference at all (not sure if I should do that)! After giving it a few revs it moved the leaver back up from the bottom by about 10mm. Surely it should push it right back up to the top?

my old lift pump felt the same. like the leaver was doing nothing when pumping it. turned out the leaver was broken. undo the outlet pipe ontop of teh lift pump and pump the leaver, see if it pushes anything through.

Tried it and there was nothing. Going to get a new pump tomorrow ans they are only £16.
Im hoping this has something to do with it being down on power.

The lift pump lever will feel loose or pressurised, depending on where the camshaft stops when you turn the engine off. If it feels loose, like it's not doing anything, just spin the engine over either by hand or on the starter, and try again, until you can feel pressure on the lever.

One piece of advice would be to avoid cheap lift pumps at all costs; I'm on my fourth one at the moment, and it's showing signs of failure after less than 6 months. Needless to say, the next one I fit will be genuine -- either that or I fit an electric one! :p:rolleyes:

The one I have fitted at the moment is a genuine pump. My plan is to buy a non gen one, (only £16) and if it makes a difference I will go and buy a genuine one. If not, ill re fit my original one and keep my other on me as a spare.

Good plan ;)

Just for future reference I changed the lift pump and it now drives much better! It now picks up through the whole rev range. It felt very flat once it was on boost before, almost like it had a faulty turbo.

Interested in this....Can you tell us which pump you bought? I have seen some Delphi ones for around £25

It was one of the delphi pumps for £25 pound off ebay.

Are the britpart ones really that bad?!

Yes Britpart really are that bad... and the Delphi pumps aren't that much better, Pos on here and I have had endless problems with the diapragms failing, levers shearing off, leaks etc etc
