Hi all 1st post.after buying my 1st discovery 300tdi last week,decided to go down the old veggie route.so today i've put my 1st 7.5litres of KTC's finest in on 1/4tank full and will top up with 15 litres of diesel tomorrow to give roughly a 66/33 mix and will let you all know how i get on later.
 
Aaaaah,the joys of summer veg oil motoring..get saving up for a heated filter for winter !
 
well i've done 325miles since putting the veg in on my 300tdi.now running on 50/50 mix no problems,roughly when could i expect the vehicle to show signs of filter blocking as i would of thought there should be signs now.!
 
doesn't always happen,depends on the state of the tank and pipes-keep a spare filter on board-you will know when it is change time
 
i know if mine needs changing as when the turbo kicks in the engine dies and the check engine light comes on.
 
Now, excuse my ignorance.. What about the TD5 engine?? Does it survive without any mods too?

The TD5 is not BMW built, it's rover built and the general consensus is that running it on veggie oil is risky.

I've started running my 300 tdi on veggie oil and I've noticed that the engine takes a few seconds longer to fire up. - Is this normal?

it is with mine, i'm running 75%bio/25%veg and it dose take a bit of turning over, i have not yet investigated my glow plugs so i'm not sure if they are fully working.
 
Even with 2 heaters, one pre filter and one after that uses the heater matrix to heat it once up to temp, and injector heaters, mine still takes a bit of turning over - hence I have a 2 battery set up, as I have flattened one before running too much veggie in too colder temps :rolleyes:

But with the price of veggie increasing and the pumps slowly coming down, I haven't bothered with veggie for a while - waiting for another BOGOF offer at Tesco :D

The TD5 is fine on 50% biodiesel. Opinions vary about using pure veg but I wouldn't do it myself - it's a very expensive engine to repair if anything does go wrong!

the only heaters that are worth anything are block heaters, they circulate and heat your cooling water from a 230v supply and bring the whole engine up to temp the rest are a waste of time and money.
 
Right sorry to dig up this thread if its an old one.
Im welsh, therefore im a tight fisted git!

Now, im getting slightly confused with the derv/bio/veg/svo terminology.
So, saying i go down to Makro or some other supermarket, do i buy just regular vegetable oil and mix it with normal derv, both straight into the tank?

And im seeing some variation in fuel ratios, is it derv 30/70 veg or the other way round?

and with the colder months coming which way does the ratio swing?

just to make you more confused ,you get more thinning for your money using petrol.
5% petrol/95% veg would be good this time of year,pushing it up to 10% petrol as it gets colder.Don't go above 15% petrol in case you run into vapour lock.
10% petrol equates to about 30% derv addition in terms of thinning and is cheaper.
If you can get mis-fuel (mix of derv and petrol) ,this is ideal and normally free
