Some have fitted a gas strut assister to help lift the bonnet. It may also be a good idea to keep the folding strut [ never had a problem with my 2a with 750x16 on bonnet] It could be hard to hold up bonnet while putting prop in place.
I think you could fix in a stick as well for safety.

Does the release spring need replacing when you fit a wheel carrier? Is the standard one strong enough to lift the bonnet with a wheel on it?

The std spring's enough to lift, lift latch and then up she goes...albeit a little slowly with the wheel on bonnet.

Spent a couple of hours fitting the wheel carrier this evening, I think it looks right! The wheel sits neatly on the rubber bung things and it seems sturdy enough. I expected it to sit directly on the bonnet for some reason. Anyway I’m pretty pleased and thanks for the advice guys, as I was fitting this the tonneau cover came so that’s the next little project

Don't forget the heavy duty bonnet stay - cheap enough and easy to fit. I found a bulldog clip bolted to the bonnet frame inside holds the stay in place really well.

the original clip is just a spring clip, like this shape but not nylon coated

That's interesting. I ordered a clip using the parts catalogue, what I was sent would not fit the diameter of the strut - so I have a bag of 8 clips that don't fit. I reckon they would be fine for an 8mm strut, mine is more like 15mm.

Will take a photo of mine tomorrow, and look it up in my parts catalogue.
The rod is deffo not 8mm, much thicker than that!
