Can i use normal 12 V heater plugs if my car is ex military 24V?
I was thinking of making a new circuit off of one battery, with just a basic push switch to turn on hearers manually. Will this be ok or do i need the circuit to go through some sort of resister thingy or serniod thingy?

If you are taking the power from a single battery there should be no problem.

Fit a relay to handle the load.

Your relay could then be activated by the push-button.

Use a 24V timer relay, such as the Lucas 33RA SRB601 connected to your ignition switch, which would be better than a remote, push-button operated one.

Remember that the switch contacts must be connected to the 12V supply.

I believe that the PRC6913 is for 12V systems ... Although I may be wrong ...

it is, but I'm assuming that as he is wanting to use standard plugs that he'll have a 12v feed for them - just off one battery - rather than feeding and killing them with 24v
 
However, he can't use a 12V relay from a 24V ignition source, or is the ignition a 12V operated system?

With a 24V relay he would be able to isolate the 12V to the switched circuit.

I live in Malawi and getting land rover series 3 parts is nearly impossible and the vast majority of post doest make it through!
These 12 volt heater plugs took me months to get and cost a lot of money for the pleasure.
So using other parts like a PRC6913 is out of the question im afraid....
However im not fussy and will be bodging it together in a true Malawian way, so attaching it to the ignition is not a priority .

So in pure basic terms a 12v relay (Which is just another name for a switch????)
With a simple 12v push switch (relay?) breaking the circuit, will work fine? And i will just have to practice how long to hold the push switch in for?
 
The (solenoid-operated) relay is fitted to take the load off the (push-button) switch, otherwise the switch will probably burn out fairly quickly.

As it is an older engine, I would be inclined to keep the heaters on for around 10 seconds before you turn the engine over.

Hi, get a 24v relay, use the 24v feed off your ignition switch to the coil part of the relay, opposite pin grounded, wire from your glow plugs to the main load pin and the opposite pin to the 12v positive off the battery. simples
 
just to let you know, i have now got the heater plugs working. I made a new circuit off of one battery put i through a relay to a push switch and on the the heater plugs.
However i emailed john craddock to see if they sold 24v heater plugs and they told me the parts manual has them listed as the same as 12 v cars..........not sure how this works..

But anyway the car starts now! Thanks for you help.
