Have you still got this project in mind?

At first glance, I see the IRD swap as possible, but it is unlikely to be confined to just the IRD.
To begin with, the IRD casings and internals are different, leading to the possibility that the external dimensions do not match, especially in the output shaft position and/or size.
There are different part numbers for the driveshafts, and from memory the wheel bearings as well, therefore the only way to do it would be to have good samples of each to compare minutely.
This would apply to everything from the input shaft (as well as the L/H output shaft inside the input shaft) right through to wheel bearings and hub splines.

There are probably great results possible for the change in ratio, and it might be of great interest to a lot of Freebie owners out there, but a lot of measuring needs to be done first.

I finally got the time to do the swap about three weeks ago, the "specialist" was right. It was a stress free bolt-on.. the only mod i did was to change the position of the water inlet and outlet tubes. For those of you who are thinking of swapping IRD's, i've done it and it's worth it. From 3500rpm @ barely 120kph, i can now comfortably do 140kph at 4000rpm.

The downside of course is that when offroad you don't get as much torque, and on normal driving acceleration is not as swift. Fuel economy is greatly improved and there is not much difference on city driving. I'm thrilled

So what you are saying is that the V6 IRD fits the PG1 gearbox? I'm surprised as I could have sworn the mounting lugs were in different places. But if it fits, it fits.

Good to know they did the usual "use as much as possible of the old bits"
Just a word of advice, the speedo is getting its signal from the ECU sensors and will now be reading lower than actual speed. Manufacturing tollerances might cover it but at motorway speeds it would be about 10km/h out. Stop watch over measured distance is your most accurate, but GPS is the easiest check.
