Hi, I'm new to the Landy Forum so hello all!! I'm a total novice when it comes to cars and engines and I'm in need of some help! First off, I have a '98 1.8 Freelander Softback. Recently, I have been losing a lot of coolant/water but with no evidence of leakage on the drive, etc. So this morning I got undrneath and noticed that the 'plate' covering the underside of the engine did have a couple of damp oily looking patches on the underside. So I wiped it down and put my fingers through the holes to see if I could come across anything and came across this piece of plastic. I'm now thinking that it's maybe this that has caused me to be losing water. I'm having to fill the expansion bottle at least every other day/100 miles and I'm just hoping it's not a major problem. Does anyone know what this is and what it does?? All help would be very much appreciated!!
Thanks

Do you 9find it inside your Freelander? Looks like some sort of foam draft seal from around a hole.

I found it on the top of the panel that protects the underside of the engine, down in the depths!! I had the head gasket done about 40k ago, could it be a possibilty that it's gone again?

Not liking the sound of this!!

It's like a hard plastic, not a foam. I can't find the other half. Do you think it has something to do with losing coolant as much as I am doing?

Think so. The coolant should be the oats red stuff. Leaves a mark if it's leaking. Once filled, and the engine running, can you see where it's leaking? Whats the enigne oil like?

There are no drip marks on the drive, that's what is a mystery. The engine oil is normal, no mayo, etc. Do I need special coolant (red as mentioned) or will regular coolant (blue) be okay? Thanks for your help so far, much appreciated.

You shouldn't mix the two types of coolant;)

Did they upgrade the oil rail when they replaced the gasket?

I've not a clue. It has been a couple of years since I had the head gasket done. The problem with the coolant has only happened over the last month or so. What is an oil rail? You will have to excuse my lack of knowledge about these things, I am totally useless when it comes to cars!

If it is going to go the way I think it's going to go, I'll be posting a Freelander Softback for sale thread!!!

Damn you head gasket!!!!!!
