Spotted this seemingly unused connector hiding behind the engine bay fuse box, does anyone have any idea what it is for?

Recognise that one too. Do you have a photo showing more of the engine in it? Not got a freelander about any more to check but had my old one apart for various things in the past.
Have you dragged it up for the photo? Thinking lambda sensor.
 
I have attached a few more photographs. The connector lies between the electrical connector box and the left hand wing and is behind the fuse box. It was dragged up to take the close up photo although the wire to the connector restricts it from being withdrawn any more.

It's not a spare O2 sensor plug, although similar in shape. The TD4 has a different engine bay harness to the V6, so wouldn't be wired for O2 sensors to start with.

I've not got round to looking at my TD4 yet. But from memory, I'm sure I have the same spare plug on mine too. Presumably it for something that's fitted as an option.
 
I don’t think the O2 sensor is right ether though it was a good shout.

I do hope it’s not provision for an optional item else I’ll be wanting the option!
 
it’s not to retrofit a FBH is it ??

see it’s for a 2005 facelift td4

or maybe to retrofit front fogs , aux lights ?

I already have a factory fitted FBH, but it could be for aux lights I guess as I don't have front fogs or driving lamps.

that’s ruled that one out then, assume it’s all working and not left unplugged , lol

only other thing i can think ref , aux lights , i bought a oem fog and spot light wiring loom and for the life of me i can’t remember the colour of the connectors

will try and see if i still have the wiring instructions

I know what you mean. I can't think of an option that would use a connector like that.
Fogs are wired right to the bumper corners and the HFS has a different colour plug. Besides, if I have the same spare plug, then the HFS wouldn't be hanging about doing nothing.
What are the colours of the wires. Maybe knowing that will help identify the circuit?
 
There are two wires. White with a purple stripe and green with a yellow stripe. They seem to disappear into a main wiring loom under the fuse box.

I'm thinking it could be something to do with the PCT heater fitted to some models.
W/P is part of the fuel pump circuit.

The G/Y is part of an ignition on live, which heads off to the PCT heater amongst other circuits.

I do believe you have it right. I was coming to a similar conclusion myself after reading the electrical spec (part attached) and I cannot think of any other option that would have provision made in a standard loom.

I don’t think I’ll be searching eBay for a second hand PCT though .....

I don’t think I’ll be searching eBay for a second hand PCT though .....

i had Pct fitted on my 2002 td4, was fitted just above the heater matrix inside the cab

noticed it when i had to replace my leaking heater

at least @Nodge68 was able to identify the aux lights position, for the life me i couldn’t remember

That's why I also have the same connection floating about. It might be handy to power some auxiliary circuits though, like DRLs for instance.

Yes it could come in handy for some goodies installed aftermarket, though I like to keep my cars pretty much as supplied. Hence why I still have my EGR and crankcase breather filter. I guess I’m just a Luddite at heart.

that makes sense ref the ptc / fbh

good idea as u say being able to pinch that connector for some drl lights ;)

must admit i always found in the winter the cabin got nice and warm , only reason i knew the ptc heater was there when i had to take all the dashboard out, all good fun , lol
