Bought a 1.8 Serengeti brand new in 2003 ..... head gasket went after 28000 miles it had been looked after and serviced properly. Got shut soon after wouldnt touch another.I know theres good and bad in everything but I wouldnt rely on one
 
My 2006 TD4 has covered just over 70,000 miles. I've had it for just over two years without any major problems. Most recently I've replaced the thermostat and the LP fuel pump but otherwise that car has been fault free and only required servicing etc.

All in all I'm a happy bunny
 
im an advocate of the K series. Brilliant engine. Ive had 7 cars with the k series and only ever had problems with 1 head gasket after a hose leaked and i was stuck in rush hour traffic so HAD to move the car.
 
Bit shocked at how the last few UK winters have wrecked the underside - thought Landies would be a bit more resistant given what they are built for but then again my old Hilux was the same underneath and they are supposed to be bulletproof too !

It is a revelation moving over here to NZ. The underside of my '99 Freelander looks like it might only have been on the road a few months - then I see the pics posted on here of UK cars and it makes me cringe! I'm sure UK councils are paid by the motor manufacturers to put salt on the roads in winter! There's also very few exhaust places (QuickFit and the like) here - they hardly ever need replacing.
 
I have an 06 TD4 that I have owned from new and I have only had 2 problems both of which I managed to fix myself.
The windscreen wipers stopped returning to bottom of the windscreen, this was due to a blob of grease on the metal contact inside the mechanism which I cleaned off.
One of the rear window regulators went wrong which I replaced with a pattern part off the internet. That lasted just over 12 months and stopped working so I have replaced it with a genuine LR part this time.
 
My father in law is the proud owner of a 2002 td4 Targa apart from the normal mods untouched . At 198732 m as of last weekend it is still on its factory fitted power train including VCU. Still on same injectors and pumps Oils and filters changed every year and that,s it
 
We bought our Freelander last year...only Euros spent on it were for the timing and auxiliary belts and tensioners -which is ordinary mainteinance for a lot of engines- and the rear differential mountings.
Prior from us a lady kept it for 14 years in admirable conditions, going religiously to the local Land Rover garage (a Land Rover specialist well known here) who fully stamped the Service Portfolio...2 batteries, 1 VCU at 155.000 km, transmission fluids changed every 60.000 km, timing belt every 100.000 km. Apart from that just the ordinary oil and filters changed every 15.000 km or 12 months.
Neither she nor we have never experienced major problems with the car...it seems far more reliable then other cars we had in the past years -especially a Chrysler Voyager and a Mercedes C220 Estate that were nightmares, the first for the engine, the latter for the electrics.
Our is a 1999 XEDI L-Series...and we love it (...waiting for something going wrong in 3...2...1...).

Had my '02 TD4 just over a year now, it has 98K miles on it. The clutch expired over the Christmas period but apart from that and a couple of bulbs it's been fault-free. Just had an MOT with no advisories and the underneath is still in brilliant condition..
 
Engine seized at 500 miles (we didn't have it then) so it was replaced with a new engine. Auto needed replaced at 12k miles with a recon due to low oil caused by leaks which feked it in the end. Following that it's not been too bad. Had all sorts of strange things go wrong but it has been used oft road for fun which is a good source of adding more failures. Luck of the draw I guess. Regular servicing and spotting faults before the get worser helps. Oft road use on any vehicle will increase the faults.
