Need some help with a gearbox problem, I need to know if anyone has ever tried to fit a 1980 110 gear box into a 1996 110. Gearbox in 1996 110 is knackered however I have the older gearbox which I know never done many miles. But what I dont know is if it is any different.

Could do once I get it out, trouble is its then off the road, if I knew the spare one wouldnt fit I could get a refurb one ordered, its just the cost thats putting me off hopefully my lotto numbers will come up this saturday and i'll launch the whole thing into the Tyne. Dont suppose anyone knows of the cheapest place to buy a refurbished gearbox and transfer box?

I would imagine its going to be an LT77 in the 1980, and a R380 in the 1996. The 380 was a direct replacement so it should fit no problem. As asked above, you can look at where the reverse is to work out gbox...

Sorry for not getting back to you ive been away for a few days. To answer a few of your questions.
1. Its a struggle to get it into gear, and when you get it into reverse there a hell of knocking noise as if theres far too much backlash. Ive already changed the clutch, slave cylinder and master cylinder.

2. On the gearbox thats in, reverse gear is beside 4th gear and i will have to check the spare one never thought to check that, what a numpty.

Decided to have next week off and get it sorted once and for all, spanners & hammers will be flying so watch out. Thanks for your help.

in the lt77 box (5 speed) in my disco, the reverse gear is next to first gear.
hope this helps you.

The Gearbox with reverse beside 4th is a R380 type and correct type for a 1996 110 300tdi. If your other gearbox is 1980 it is for a Series 111 and will be 4 speed and would not fit or be suitable. If it is 5 speed with reverse beside first it is a type LT77 and probably a 1990 from a 200 tdi. This will fit. ---BB
