Sounds good! I actually bought from a “specialist” and found absolutely woeful things. Few pump gasket missing, wrong spline wheel bodged onto the shaft etc.
It sounds like the one you have in mind is a lot better though!! Good luck with the search, I hope you find a good un and I think you should with your budget.

if someone had a Grasmere Green Heritage edition for sale private I think I’d probably be all ears lol. In approximately 6 months I’ve only seen perhaps one or two for sale in my budget. Love these ones, I’d Just have to be extremely thorough with it.

Take your garden gates off and go for a 110sw, you'll not regret it.

+1 , I was just thinking the same

@ryan_1993 , the 110 certainly has much more useable space, but...there's always a but...don't dismiss a 90/Ninety. I've just returned from 2 1/2 weeks in the Alpes in my Ninety. At one stage I had 3x mountain bikes and three of us in the Ninety [all 6ft+]. It was cosy but can be done...2x bikes on the roof strapped to the cage, 1x bike in the back with front wheel off + mountain/overnight gear for three nights.

If you like comfy can really recommend leather RX8 seats - there are good number of folk who've completed this upgrade, the seats are very comfortable and fit very well with raised seat runners. Don't dismiss 200tdi/300tdi engines either, they're tough as old nails and, if maintained/serviced correctly, have near same performance as a td5 + benefit from less electrical gubbins that do go wrong/need repairing

Re' good place to search, look at carandclassics.co.uk, the vendor calibre is generally much better than eBay/Facebook type chancers. As others have said, buy on the condition of the chassis, this is critical [here's a good example of what a good chassis looks like https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/auctions/1989-land-rover-defender-110-county-v8-X8bKlg

Good luck with search

I am still a little unsure if I should buy from a private seller or not tbh.

It seems like if a scam were to occur then I suppose it may have a higher chance of coming from a private seller, rather than a specialist such as Johnson 4x4 or Walton Motors.

My plan was to pay any deposit with a credit card, to be protected if it was discovered later the vehicle had been cloned and was stolen for example.

Being a little over cautious maybe, but my dad bought a D40 Nissan Navara privately back in 2013 and it was absolutely knackered with forged paperwork.
Get a proper HPI check done before committing to buy.
Also get rid of the gates and start looking for 130's. They get missed off and are usually a bit more of a working vehicle resulting in some better prices - ocassionally.

Well, a bit of an update.

I was going to drive around four hours to have a look at Walton Motors' showroom in Cranleigh over the weekend. They had a couple of 90's I liked the look of. A yellow Safari Edition and a more Conservative Coniston green 90. My aunt lives in Sandhurst so was going to stay there and use that as a bit of a base.

A friend of mine said to run reg plates in the MOT checker so glad I did that. I noticed quite a lot of issues looking up both model's respective Reg numbers.

Then I began searching their name on Landy Zone and became rather alarmed.

Honestly, finding a decent Defender for £15k/£16k just seems like an almost impossible feat right now. To me It seems that almost every one has just been cheaply tarted up to try and appeal to the yank export market.

Actually, a little bit concerned I am not going to find anything. I preferably wanted something by the end of September.

You will find that they have had a few tarty things done a lot of the time without the key things being addressed. I’ve just put mine up on here ;) not coniston but decent.

Don’t lose heart - best thing about buying cars is hunting them.

Good ones are out there.

Someone who lives near me sold a lovely 2005 TD5 Station Wagon with under 100,000 miles for £14,000 a few weeks ago.
lt was green with a white roof. l would have had it but she had already got a buyer when l noticed it for sale.

Hi all,

so have my funds sorted to get one. The top budget is no more than £16K.

I'm looking for anyone thinking of selling a Defender 90 in Keswick, Coniston, Grasmere or Epsom green for now, as I think the green ones are the nicest color for a Defender. Preferably a county station wagon and either a 300TDI or TD5.

Does anyone have any that they plan on selling any time soon like within the next few weeks.

That 300tdi looks nice, it's literally been to the moon mileage wise but if it drives OK that's not the issue it would be on an ordinary car.
The galvanised chassis is a big plus. Not sure about the one rear seat, but it's got the interior trim so possibly a genuine SW
You could fit rear seats, if you wanted.

What about this?
£10,000
Looks very clean, seller is offering their ramps for you to inspect underneath.
Plus it's a 2004, so has the later dash and the more reliable 15p version of the TD5.

Minor bodywork £500
Convert to Station Wagon for £1500 and you've got effectively a late model TD5 CSW for £12,000

Worth a train ride, surely
