nowt wrong with any landys, i got ones form every decade cept 40's 80's and 00's - i just dont rate the TD!

wunt bein touchy in the slightest, in fact i found it kinda funny that we were arguing over something that trivial

i'm not arguing

i'll make my point once again - despite what you have said, there's absolutely nothing wrong with a 1988 TD engined landy

you must have not actually read my first post then - i quite clearly stated the bulkhead and chassis are bloody important ;) but for his price range he can get himself a decent TDI engined non rust bucket

but no you are quite right, may as well not go for a tdi despite him easily being able to afford a decent example and instead pay over the odds for a TD :D:rolleyes::doh:

Could have fooled me, I can't find any Tdi's for my budget!!

Is there anywhere else to look other than the usual Autotrader route??

Cheers for the replies lads

Cheers for reply, I'll have a look.

Just to update on previous posts I've searched the forum and found info on buying used Defenders, but any other tips will be appreciated. But like I said I'm struggling finding a TDI model for my budget even though I've been told that I'd be able to find a few, so any advice on where to buy Landrovers or specific places to find them for sale would also be appreciated.

Cheers,

take a drive to the brightwells 4x4 auction in leominster, they have alot nd you can inspect before buying also

You are a Gent, I'll have a look at them..

no worries - the best bit of advice i can think of is if you have a mate that knows about landys take him, it could stop you buying a crock of ****e. its one thing looking at photos but another seeing in person

if you dont, ask here if someone local would care to join you on your buying trips. as long as you offer a pint and a packet of crisps im sure someone would be more than happy to help!

if you dont know what to look for a duff chassis can look decent with a coat of waxoyl, a rear cross member that needs replacing can look remarkably good with a coat of paint, and a bulkhead that totally shod can look half decent as well.

so if you know anyone take em, they can point out if its duff

if all else fails, look for rust on the bulkhead, if you cant see any look for paint bubbling, a small amount can be sorted but if theres a fair bit it means theres a bigger underlying issue than perhaps it seems.

check the chassis all over very carefully, and especially the outriggers.

take up the floor mats in the interior and have a look at the floorwells, they are liable to rusting away as well. and the rear crossmember, if it has a towball stand on it, short of you being a proper fat **** the crossmember shouldnt flex or move at all

check for any leaks near the engine, there is likely to be a small amount, its a land rovers in built rust protection, but anything more than a drip on the ground and you need to investigate further.

also if you can take it for a drive, check for vague steering, whining from the diffs or gearbox, and try out low range, check the lights come on for difflock etc etc - as that can often get seized if it isnt used

oh, and if you can at all help it get one without a sunroof, they leak like buggery

take a large flat blade screw driver-quite fierce taps will not do any harm, unless it's shagged

footwells prime rot area

well if you drop booger on the forum a line he has a tdi engined truck cab for sale, dont know how much but im damn certain its under 3k

i cant remember if you said 90 or 110 so will just send some links from autotrader of ones that seem to look in decent enough nick to warrent another look

1990 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90

1995 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 110 300 TDI

1996 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90 300TDI

there's only 2 under (just) 3k - and as they are being sold by dealers VAT is likely to be payable

Bastid I've got an 87TD and apart from smoking like a chimney the engine has never let me down & i've covered some serious miles in it. Chassis is solid (I fitted a new crossmember) Bulkheads been welded by previous Op & I had to fit new door bottoms and a rear door but never had any trouble from the engine.

my defender was on the market for a grand more than i paid for it, especially nowadays you can pay alot less than than the asking price

if i were the op i would go to brightwells personally, B3aker on the forum picked up an ex utilities TD5 with just over 100k on the clock for 3 something, you can find decent tdi engined landys for the 3k mark there usually

im just going by my experience with them, been stuck by the side of the road twice with a turbo failing one time and a cracked piston the other, and once stuck at whaddon with a turbo fail also. so i havent had a great deal of good experience with them, also find em to be a bit gutless. but i have never owned one, only driven mates ones, all of which have defected to tdi's

that last one looks like it's had a very easy life, if i was looking to spend 3k on a landy i'd be happy to travel down to see that - there's not many around left in that condition

plus you'll have a few quid left for a set of 750s and some fuel to get it home

hi mate, go for a 200tdi or 300tdi. The main areas are the rear cross member, chassis and bulkhead. For the money you are paying it will be a little untidy. If i were u I would budget 2750 for the car and hold back 250 for repairs. Depends on your income. u get more pick up for your money but they are impractical. If u can find an ex utility then go for it you know its mean erviced then...

same way you didnt read the last thing i posted really;)

the one i posted up for 3250 looks in half decent nick. go there, look at it, and barter down, simples.

and as i also mentioned brightwells auctions will have many vehicles within his price range, and he can take a ganders at as many as he likes before purchasing so that would also be a good option

theres more places than just the interwebz to buy cars ya know:rolleyes:

theres also no point rushing into buying something when he can wait for the right vehicle to turn up. i waited a few months before i was happy with the one i got, tdi's ARE in his price range, i dont give a **** if you say they arent till you go red in the face, they ARE. my neighbour is about to leave for a well published and documented trip around africa, they feature monthly in LRM and i found them a 300tdi 110 for 3k

the money one the blue one and the green one seem good.Low milage, no visible rustin, either could be worth a pop....
