keep trying! you convince us one day that its a fine choice of engine and has no servere problems with over heating and terminal HGF..
i once had a water hose go on a ally engine. drove fer longer than i would have liked before stopping. renewed hose and drove fer another week with a blown head gasket, while awaiting new HG . skimmed head to just over max. allowed and refitted it with new HG. over two years later its still going.
don't think theres any change of doing that with the 1.8 fitted to the hippo.


Thats nothing. My MOT was in Feb, knew it had HGF cause I had mayo in the expansion tank did a block test with culprit being cylinder one at only 6 bar, remaining were around 9 bar and that was a cold reading.

Drove for another few months before deciding to get down to fix it, lost count of the mileage the the FL Was many hundreds of miles certainly over a thousand. Was waiting for internal micrometer arriving from Japan before getting down to the work. It was June by the time I got round to fixing the HGF. FL runs real well after 6000 miles and you can notice the drop in power due to loss of compression.

When I examined the head gasket it was plain to see where the split was in the elastomeric compound on cylinder one. In fact most of the red beading was ready to break apart

Incidently it was a mate from uni who informed me first about the new polymer technology on the MLS. I'll take my chances with his recommendations, but with him being a physicist/material scientist what would he know Slob.

Just to assure you that I am not on drugs, so why did I put up with it? Answer I had a first rate LR main dealer who fixed it under warranty and loaned me a car while it was being fixed.

MHM - the new LR gasket has addressed the 1.8 HGF problem. I know its far to early to tell, but my £550 vehicle has now covered 5K following its rebuild using the latest components.

To be honest I've had more issues with the coolant elbow to cylinder head - it just kept weeping on LR gaskets until I used a smear of red hermetite.

To the chap who is buying the W reg freelander:

Don't be put off by the bad publicity - other manufacturers (inc those with a griffin in their logo) also have gesket issues.

Just keep an eye on the engine temperature - if it goes above halfway at anytime stop and investigate.

A seal less than a £1 failed on my car and the previous owner continued to drive until the engine (and head gasket) was cooked. £273 on parts and I have a vehicle that is running, in good condition and worth about £3500.

Ive bin told by an lr mech that the new gasket sorts out the problem, but its the same wiv any hgf if you over cook it then other major problems like warped head and quite a few more can lead to problems that the replacment cannot cure. . . .wots the rule, , ,never ever overheat yer motor , but human nature says ,ive only got 50 miles un i'm ome. . . . .:)
 
Kinda off topic but... following your comments ming, my local landie specialist had a air blockage on my 2.5dse rangie a couple of months ago and he said the only way to cure it was to run the car into the red temperature wise... I nearly had a heart attack it was in the red for about 10-15mins I was getting so narky about it he had to send me away! it did do the trick tho with no damage! well none before I sold it:D
