Hi all I'm thinking of buying a freelander 2005 ish model diesel but I've heard a lot of bad things about them is this on all years or just certain years and models?

i have found they are no different from other cars they all have good and bad points
at the end of the day if you look after a car it will look after you
drive it and dont bother doing the basics and they all bite

for many years I've been a vitara owner, great little 4x4's, but they are just that "little" and like you had listened to the gossip that freelanders were bad news, even though I loved the look of them, and the space inside, anyway around 5-6 months ago I took the plunge and bought a 2000 diesel, a couple of minor things needed doing, but I absolutely love it, drives like a dream now,

Ok is it true that BMW made the engin in some hence why some are cam chain!

The TD4 Freelander uses the BMW M47 engine. This is good and bad. It's a reasonably reliable engine but costs lots to fix should it fail. Injectors are a common fail point along with fuel pumps and the odd turbo. Don't choose a car based on the cam drive system, a cam belt it just as reliable as a chain, more so really as long as they are changed when necessary ;)

Ok so in all its not a motor just as long as you look after it and maintain it on a regular basis is there anything I should look for when buying one?

If the clutch is high on the peddle it may need doing at some point £1000.
And make sure it not to tight in reverse on full lock may be vcu on It's way out
