Thor gives better low down torque than Gems, also electronics are much more robust.
Thor was introduced in '99. Gems will have 4.0 or 4.6 on the intake plenum, Thor will have an intake manifold like a bunch of bananas!
Performance wise:
4.0l Gems is a little better than 2.5 diesel
4.0l Thor is similar to 4.6 Gems
4.6 Thor is the perfect engine for the P38 with a much better ZFHP24 transmission.

Spec levels seem to be a little random to say the least, a bit like BMW.
Westminster was a limited edition for 2001, in 2.5 diesel or 4.0 V8, upgraded trim levels, with custom HK sound system (shared with last production Vogue SE's), sat nav. Basically has all the toys. I think in either black or grey with black leather interior.

EAS system should not take more than a few seconds to manually cycle through the different heights on the selector switch. Check the system is working as it should whilst driving, it should lower to motorway height after exceeding 50mph & rise back to standard if you drop below etc. Check the pump isn't coming on too often feeding leaks & if you can & have time, check the cars not dropping.

EAS, as Martyn said,

Spec, a DSE should have all you need, DHSE even better.

Leaks outside, As with any car oil coming from diffs or box, Grease coming form Hubs / balljoints, Oil / fuel / water coming from Engine, PAS fluid.

Leaks inside, carpets should be dry as a bone, check that front carpets aren't "Melted" i have been to see one that had obviously had a heat gun on the carpet to dry it out.

Gearbox, IMO stay away from manual.

History, at least the service book stamped up to at least half of its current mileage, then expect receipts for self service items, anything else is a bonus.

There may be no difference between a DSE & a DHSE as they were typical BMW pick & mix. I have a DHSE, no sunroof (great IMO) no electric seats for example, I have seen DSE's with both.

I would have thought it went on model year, I have a MY97 brochure downstairs which I will have a look at but to me it looks like the later the car generally the better spec it is.

I saw a DT for sale the other day, most amazingly basic spec Ive ever seen!

Back to the questions:

EAS - If you can get to see the car cold from the night before, mainly to see if its stayed level and at height overnight. Also check it raises and lowers in the correct time. There should be enough air for it to drop to access and then climb all the way to the wade setting without any pause of more than a few seconds whilst the height change takes place. Remember it shouldn't move with any of the doors open and IIRC it wont move for quite a while if your foot is on the brake.

I would advocate a Thor 4.6 over anything as its what I have but having been in a "good diesel" and a Gems 4.6 the later Thor 4.6 just makes the car live up to its reputation of being a beast.

You could never get a manual box on a 4.6 so if you see a 4.6 manual its a bodge up or a 4.0 pretending to be a 4.6. The manual gearbox does appeal, especially with the diesel as it does improve performance somewhat but the autobox mated with the 4.6 well serviced is surprisingly refined and very strong.

I would look for originality where possible, no aftermarket stereo or tv screens or anything bodged into the old girl, anything like that just screams battery drain problems and what damage has it done to the rest of the car where someone has just found a wire with some power in it and spliced some rubbish into it.

Check for everything working especially higher spec stuff as it can be very expensive to fix, especially if you look at a vogue with nav make sure the stereo works and the sound on the nav works as I believe they share the same amp and it appears to be made of ground up rhino horn and elephant ivory at its rarity and cost. A friend of mine spent about £900 buying second hand parts to fix the stereo and satnav in his 2001 Vogue and although it worked the amp would still occasionally make a pop sound.

no for cloth seats. No to Manual been usind a 300tdi disco and its bloody annoying no to manual heater controls. And no for a manual gearbox. Loved the auto the hevac and well leather is easy to wipe down at end of the day. Its quite scary having to go look and be with a fine toothcomb as it would seem. Everyone would have told me to steer clear of my last one and i was lucky with it tbh. want to find one thats worth the cash and alright enough to get on top of what needs doing and do whatever pops up as its needed. I doubt il be buying local within 100miles or so.

Another question my old key fob for my dse is only 3month old like brand new still. Could i or would it save money having the key recoded and cut if the new one only had 1key fob? Or more of a pain then 175 for a second?

I don't believe you can have an existing key for a P38 re-coded to suit another one.

The only way to get another key for your car is via the main dealer. It is said always buy a car with two fobs, although I've only ever had one. I should buy another one really its just most of the time I can find better things to spend £160 on.

Mine came from 260 miles away, always worth casting your net wide to get the best car you can.

Mine is a late 2000 model, as I said DHSE with no electric seats & no sunroof. My DT has a sunroof but no aircon. The designation means nothing.

It is quite surprising - I do wonder how many have replacement tailgates with the wrong badges for the car!

Mine had no badges except range rover and the land rover badge look better without imo there is one down in Kent 700miles so fly down drive home really keen on (laqure peel on bonnet dent below rear light. Dent in top of top tailgate.priced to suit though 1300 10months mot 4.6. 96 plate on eas really honest lad and seems to put down this good this is the bad. May be worth the trip see my family in Windsor and then see the rangie (she is dark green though)

I've been offered a 4.6 to add to my collection. Got a new engine from Solihul that's done 3k, a recon g/box and new wheels and tyres but hasn't moved for 4 years. Oh and an lpg system fitted at a cost of £2000 just before parking up. No idea of year, colour or condition but must be worth a look at.
