Hi there, just found the site and am hoping some of you very knowledgeable landy-types may be able to help. I have a 1997 (P-plate) defender 90 300TDi Hard top, problem is I have 3 dogs who don't appreciate the temperature it gets in the summer. What I am after is sourcing some rear sliding windows and having them fitted. I have found prices around £210 for a pair but the quality of the units seem to vary alot. I am wondering if anyone has had this done or may know a ball-park figure I would be looking at to have them fitted.
Also does anyone know if I have to change the details on my reg and/or notify my insurance company when i make the change?

Over in the sunny island of singapore, all defenders are registered as tow trucks or goods vehicles (van). so initially we all couldn't have any side windows at all. but then LTA (the vehicle governing body) changed the law recently so many have flocked to cut side windows and alpine roof in their defenders.

I paid like a total of 860SGD for my windows to be fitted and mine are non sliding. got the original LR non sliding from the UK and it cost me 680SGD inc. shipping and insurance thru the local land rover dealer. so the price of 210 pounds better get you the original LR part.

labour cost may be a bit more in your country but here i was charged 200sgd which is abt 67pounds.
 
Hi, thanks for that. I have had a quote from Bearmach for £126.50 + £8.51 carriage for a sliding window kit. It says:


To suit Series 3 / Defender 90 - as OEM
Sliding Window Kits (pair). Flange Fit

Although not quite sure what OEM means, or flange fit for that matter!!!:confused:

Anyway I am gonna call my friendly local garage and find out how much he would charge for the fitting.
 
There was an article in one of the landy mags, unfortunately I dont recall which one. Looks easy enough. All you would need is a scriber, a drill, a jig saw, and some pop rivets. Oh and a pop rivet gun of course.
I am thinking of doing it to mine.
 
i watched the guy at the workshop do mine, so it's basically how well you mark out the cut.

just get it correct and then drop in the window. get it wrong and you screw up your side panel and not to mention it will leak!! or in the not so worst case, you get unaligned windows or crooked ones. hee hee

Looking at origional question, I do think you have to let the insurance company know when fitting rear windows, they will want to see an engineers report, probally available from the guy / gal (pc or what??) that puts them in. Otherwise if it has just passed its DOE after they have been installed they will let ya away with a sending them a copy of that. That was my experience anyway, hope it helps..
 
Thanks for that Ian, I thought I would probably have to notify them at least, even if they didn't need any paperwork.
I've just got to find some window guards of some sort and I will be ready to go! I have seen some from Mantec (internal or external) but I am waiting to see if they are suitable for my year of defender. If not I may ask a metal-friendly mate of mine to weld me up some sort of grating I can fix on the inside. Dont need it for vehicle security just to stop 3 mad dogs jumping out to chase motorbikes on the way down the motorway!!!:eek:
 
Hi Again, HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!
I had my windows fitted over christmas, and I am sooooo chuffed. Can't get over how much visability I have now. I have posted piccie but the contrast is a bit dodgy.

Just changed pictures.......i think! They are still a bit bright, but it was about to snow when we took them.

Mine is an ex-police LR, and they had the windows fitted at some point. Only found this out recently.
 
Just thought I'd mention in passing, your nearside wiper is at an odd angle,
Does this give you better wiping on the drivers side? Is it a cunning trick? Or is it just a land rover?
 
Mmmmmmmmmm its a landie!!!
When I clean it and move the wipers it goes back in the right position, but whenever I use them it always stops short and stays at that jaunty angle! Who knows why??
 
Whilst we're on the subject of wind screen wipers. What is the second position on the steering column stalk supposed to do?

Faster, Slower, Intermittent or nothing?

At the moment mine does all four and none of them when you want!
 
Mine is:
Down for intermittent

Up one for normal wipe
Up two for fast wipe

...........and is stays wonky after all of them!!!!
