wee bit of advice please.
Thinking of changing/downsizing my Disco 2 for a Freelander.
Looking at FL2 auto 07/08 plates.
However lots of good deals on end of line FL1 auto out there with 06/07 plates.
Any help gladly appreciated.

I think a TD4 auto freelander 1 is about as good as it gets. The newer engine is not as good.

If you can get a good body and under 70k miles go for it.

Mine at 100k is plagued with niggling faults, none of which are show stoppers, but all of which are irritating.

To date it has needed brake light switch, rear window regulator, new fuel pump, propshaft VCU bearing, full wheel alignment all 4 wheels, a bloody good service with lots of stuff like fuel filters replaced...

and to come is sunroof cable and slider repair plus aircon regas, a rear driveshaft oil seal and some tweaks on the headlight alignment.

All of this stuff is simply 100k miles of constant use stuff - its cost about a grand to fix it all to date, some my self some the garage.

It all depends - of its a second car and you can take time out to fix it, then the older cars are to my mind nicer.

If you need dealer style warranty and a car that is reliable from the word go, get something a bit newer.

Thanks for all the info. I remember getting a Peugeot 405 estate end of line with all sorts of goodies on it to get them out the door.
If and when we do downsize i will go for the best we can afford.
Reluctant at 73 to take out a carloan.

We'd had Discos for about 12 years, both petrol & diesel. We came to changing 5 years ago and the Mrs wanted to go Freelander, so we got a diesel F1.

At first I was pretty indifferent to the Freelander, but it grew on me and has been a great car. If you go for a late HSE spec, I'm sure you'd settle in with it a lot quicker

Ours is much more 'start of line' rather than 'end of line' - so doesn't have some of the creature comforts - but there again it has all the bits Lenny mentions - and they're all still original - its been boringly reliable. Just take care of your tyre pressures and monitor the VCU and they're fine motors (if you avoid the petrol engines which can/will give problems).

No experience of the F2. Ours is the L Series diesel.
