Hi guys
New to the forum
Currently in the market for a disco 2 td5 always wanted one and like the look of them
Would like some buying advice please what to look out for etc
Had 300tdis in the family before just unsure what else to check other than the air suspension

Also I'm only 21 so if anybody could recommend insurance companies that would be great currently with flux direct but cannot phone then till tomorrow

Have found one locally for sale, could someone clear up whether these are chain or belt driven?

Hi Matt,

Be a good chap and nip into the Introduce Yourself section, and tell us a little bit about yourself, otherwise you might get jumped on by some of the Old Gimmers on here who like to stick to the old courtesies and protocols of the forum.

As far as I remember, the Disco is generally driven by something called 'an engine' with the final transmission through a couple of gear boxes before being sent out to the axles via a couple of propellor shafts, which spin the front and rear differentials on the axles sending drive to the wheels.

However, someone might have invented one which is either chain or belt driven whilst I wasn't looking ... I would be inclined to ask Clarkson or Stig.

Check all the usual stuff; rust underneath, particularly around the back end on the rear cross member.
The air suspension is pretty good, some will scream at you to get rid of it immediately or even sooner, but apart from changing the bags on mine at about 70,000 miles I've had no problems at all. As the old saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
The Td5 engine is a fairly rugged power plant, but like everything else, only if you look after it properly. It does have its own ideosyncracies, but if you do a search on the forum you'll find out everything you need to know. It's a chain driven camshaft system with a belt for the external stuff.
Remember, most of the posts are because there's a problem with a Landy. Very few people will post up saying that they had yet another trouble free day of motoring.
The newest Disco 2 is now 11 years old so you can expect some "wear and tear".

Now go over to the "Introduce yourself" section and err .... umm .... introduce yourself.

My father has good knowledge of the 300tdi engine but like me has never tried or know much about td5's
I enjoy looking after my cars always have done and have a passion for car detailing so hoping to buy one with cared for paintwork
 
Very good cars but check for chassis rust.

Air suspension is great and easy to work on.

ACE is great but can be difficult to fix due to expensive parts.

TD5 is an excellent lump but keep it regularly serviced

Paintwork is not usually that much of an issue - it's the rest of the vehicle! :)

Air suspension - I'm not screaming at you to get it swapped for springs, just be prepared to budget for new bags every now and then.

Wheels bearings - no wobble! If there is then replace. Yet again budget for those replacements - a D2 wheel bearing is the entire hub! Search for 3 amigos (ABS, TC, HDC lights) it's related.

Rear chassis rust.

ACE system - if it has it, can get expensive to retain.

I would say be extremely wary of AF, ideally don't touch them with a bargepole. They may well offer you the cheapest insurance, but there's a very good reason for that. Try the comparison websites, won't be as cheap as AF but as always you get what you pay for.

Good luck in your search for a D2, there's stacks of info on here that'll help you should you need it (being a Landy you probably will) ;)
 
Rust rust and rust is the main thing to be aware of. I looked at 04 plates that had only just passed their MOT and as they split along the bottom seam of the chassis its not an easy repair like on older landrovers.
