hi

this is my first time on this site and wished to say hello, im in swanley kent looking for my first Freelander

over the years ive had the series 3 88 and 109's.

ive started to look around for a freelander 2002 TD4 auto either a 3 or 5 door

unfortunatly ive only got £3,000, plus i have a very weak left leg due to surgery so would defently need an auto

ive seen plenty of commercial vehicles around the 2500 mark, but not sure if i run from these, it would be ideal as it would only be my wife and my black lab.

if i did get one would i be able to take out the rear floor pan and convert it to have seats.

it was just a thought that if i bought a commercial freelander cheaper than normal , so at least ive got one then to over time work on it

any advise would be really appeciated please

Just one question, why not a 2000 or 2001 Td4 auto. The good thing about the commercial is it's cheaper road tax & doesn't get hit with all that emmission band nonsense. Just remember to check your insurance company will cover it & it doesn't cost much more to do. Some insurers are good whilst others can be funny regarding commercials.
 
hiya.

ive just been offered a freelander TD4 auto 3 door commercial for £2,100 as the owner said it has 150,000 miles on the clock.

has full service history.

i was going to have a look at it on thurs, he said that it was used by a manager who just visted site in it.

he also informed me the body work is nice and straight, no knocks, the back is a bit roughed up but i could just get a liner for it.

what do you think, plus if i ever wanted to could i convert it by putting seats in the back by removing the rear floor panel or is it part of the structure

It's a great idea. I'm sure the dog won't mind no rear seats and if the one a guy uses here at work is typical the dog guard in a commercial doesn't go right across at full height. The only other issue is whether you can cope with there being no side windows.

thanks, for the time being i was going to put some soundproofing, carpet etc in the back for my lab.

regarding the windows, i intended if i bought the freelander, to get windows cut in, it has the rear electric window,just the side ones are blanked out.

what do people think about the high mileage, is it very risky with 150,000 miles on the clock

hi gary, welcome to the forum.

I have the td4 auto commercial myself, which I use for work all day everyday. really happy with it, it's a great drive. Once you get used to driving with the mirrors rather than looking over your shoulder, it's no different.

all the mountings are in place for the rear seats and seat belts, and they come up on ebay from time to time. you may have to be a little careful about the insurance implications of fitting the seats to the back of a commercial, it comes down to type approval issues, and as previously stated, some insurance companies can be funny.

150k is a lot of miles for a vehicle, but if it has a good service history then maybe not something to be afraid of. As long as it has had regular oil changes, the BMW based engine should be fine. I bought mine with 36k on the clock and it now has 82k, going strong, no problems (touch wood).

luckily for you, you are close to dakar 4x4, just on the birchwood road. they are really good at what they do, and I always take mine there for service and mot. Not a million miles from you, I'm in Dartford.

thanks so much, its a trade seller but i know that some warrenties arnt worth the paper they are written on as soon as you drive it away your on your own, i was going to get home and relay from the aa , seeing they do it for £67.00 and the insurance with them is 374 for my wife and i.

Funny enough i useto drive vans at work with no side windows when i was a corgi gas engineer

would it be difficult to change the gearbox oil -engine oil -engine filter- air filter-get some new injectors so i can give it a small overhaul.

trouble is ive only worked on series 3's and not use to such a complicated engine, would just feel very nerviuos doing it for the first time on my own, i wonder if there was anyone near me that i might be cheeky and see if someone would show me,but wouldnt wish to cause any disrespect or cause offence by asking

If you are want rear windows, you can take the hardback off and replace it with the hardback or softback from a non commercial model, can you not?

only thing that is slightly tricky on your list is the changing the auto transmission fluid, lots written on this forum about it so worthwhile doing a search.

getting the injectors out can be a problem too, as they tend to become stuck at around 50k.

other than that, oil, filter, air filter, crankcase breather etc are all reasonably simple to do.
 
hi i got a td4 van great no promblems with it i run it on 50/50 bio fuel serviced reg. the insurance for you sounds high have you have you done a search my insurance incl my wife is 220 fully comp
 
straight forward to convert commercial to van, as the last post says stick a hardtop on to get rear windows, other side windows push out,all trim fits new ones get screwed in. DVLA are fine about changing bodyplan to make it into car, just done a 2006 one, and adds 1000s onto price of vehicle,
The only problem i came across is there is no provision for rear seat belt main mounts, the ones at top and bottom are there, but not the part to take the main unit, the small metal panels are available from landrover at £30 each side and panels are marked where they should go. Any competent welder will do this for you
