Any advice on buying one.

its a 2011 110 xs utility
totally standard apart from led lights and sawtooths
45K aprox
£15300
no mot

Its from a online salvage company who says chassis id tampered with.
Looks like it was a professional clone job.
Any advice if this would be the chassis number under the bonnet or on the chassis itself
Or how obliging are landrover in providing the orginal number.

If you plug a nanocom (set up for a Puma) into the diagnostics socket it will read the VIN number and display it on the screen. It's the first thing a nanocom does when first plugged in.

I haven't bought it yet...its a mate who is in in the salvage business you won it in auction but doesn't really want it.

My biggest concern is getting a new vin plate or chassis re-stamped by landrover. Not sure to what extent that have chaged its id.

at that age it should be obd2 compliant, in which case lots of cheapy diagnostics should read the VIN too.

Puma Workshop manuals and electrical diagrams can be downloaded from the links in one of the posts.

VIN plate is on top of the brake master cylinder and on dash board passenger side behind windscreen. As previous post (and Mad Hat Man's post) can be read from diagnostics. Provided the management and security hardware has not been changed as part of the cloning. I understand that the gear box, transfer box, front and rear axles all have unique numbers (download and check manuals in links above this might confirm what I understand). The true VIN number will identify the vehicle body type. Some research and checking the vehicle by you should establish the extent of the tampering but might need a main dealer to verify the transmission numbers are correct. Hope you can get the legitimacy restored.

It looks a nice clean Landy and low mileage too.
l wonder if it belonged to anybody on here? It's a good price, probably about £8,000 below retail, especially if you can recover the ID and reg number.

Not possible to verify mileage if the vehicle is a ringer. My guess is its a stolen vehicle, given a registration number and vin numbers from another vehicle. The original identity needs to be re-established, true VIN (possibly still stored in the software) needs to be matched to the engine, transmission, axle numbers. And that's just for starters, I'm sure DVLA will want to inspect it before issuing a V5c.
 
A main dealer should able to advise the reg they have on the system as well as the original spec.

Don't waste your time trying. I worked at Land Rover 40 years and knew loads of people in senior positions, but was still unable to get a blank Vin plate for my hybrid build. Main dealers will not sell you a blank Vin plate either. Tou will not be able to buy a Vin plate with your Vin already stamped on.
Best advice is forget the vehicle and buy another. The DVLA are no help these days as they have closed many of their inspection depots and there was talk of the work going out on contract. If you have to have the vehicle put through an IVA test it costs in the region of £400 and it can fail if the speedo is a couple of MPH out of calibration.
If the chassis Vin has been tampered with you will have hassle every time you MOT it as it will look like a ringer.
 
Why would there be a problem with mot ? New chassis's don't have numbers, Lot's of Defender's have Chassis numbers missing or restamped.
He would have the Documents for it to be legal, Kit cars don't have original VIN plates and are road legal

Since when did "Q" = worthless?

Slap a personalized plate on it and you would be hard pressed to tell which decade it was from.

Same as any vehicle, only worth as much as someone else is willing to pay, good clean motor will sell for what it is worth regardless of reg.
