Hi Guys,

I'm currently he owner of a 50th anniversary special disco 1 v8 on lpg (for sale if anyone's interested). I've been offered a 1999 p38 by a friend (a mechanic) who has owned it for 2 years.

The work done of the p38 over the last 2 years is extensive (it's a 4.6 hse btw):

New Thor top hat engine installed 10k ago
New heater matrix and I rings
New air springs an compressor
New gearbox oil cooler and pipe work
New fuse box
New maf
New steering box/rack
Multi point lpg with doughnut tank
Stainless power flow exhaust
2002 facelift rear clusters and repeaters
Unlocked bcem

I think that's it, from what I've read that's most of the weak points covered, but I'd appreciate people's input.

Cheers

Sorry should have said, it's for 135k on the clock. Engine was done at 123k, it was replaced with a recon Thor unit with top hat liners as it runs lpg, radiator had been replaced too.

Condition looks good, dash is a bit scuffed and it needs a good clean, leather needs cleaning but there are No cracks or tears which is good.

It's up for £2500. Just need to see it again, noticed the suspension was a little slow to raise, but doing some reading it may have been low pressure n the tank as I had tried it a couple of times :)

Runs well on lpg but it does switch back to petrol in sport when you gun it though. Other than that it all looks good.

Does it have mulipoint LPG injection or the cheap nasty single point?
Normally (from experience) I would advise avoiding all P38's, however this one sounds like it has had all the problem areas addressed so could be a good truck.

Bit of a sweeping statement mate, what would you advise in it's place?

Jeep Grand Cherokee wj with the 2.7 Mercedes turbo Diesel engine.
It saddens me that I dislike the D2 and detest the D3 and D4.
I just hope my D1 doesn't turn into ferrous oxide too quickly.

Looking at some of the horror stories on Jeeps and the price of parts, I think you are out of order. The P38 needs a fair bit of TLC but parts are as cheap as chips and mine has never let me down in 5 years.:p:)

I would be lost without my P38"s , I would have no need to swear as much and too much money in my pocket if I didn't have them :)

After owning alot of 4 x 4 some new some old I have to say my 97 P38 4.0 SE is the best car i have had and I have pledged to keep it on the road come what may . The Key is maintenance both preventative and on going .. Give a P38 TLC and it will give you many delightful years service .. Mine had 1 owner from new before me and a full service history and loving maintenance , has done 156k on original drive train, Interior like new , little bit of corrosion to bottom of tail gate is only issue otherwise all original , burns no oil and runs like new ( almost , need to fix a knocking rear shocker but thats next months job )

treat em right and you will reap the benefits of What IMO is the best Range Rover you can get .. Sorry not a fan of Jeep and Nasty had one and regretted it .
