Hi there,

Im new here so ill say hello to all.

I have a question about a Landrover ive been offered that maybe some of the experts could help me with.

Its a 1996 Discovery V8 spec (leather seats etc) on a 1976 Range Rover chassis. Chassis has been sandblasted and galvanised. engine and gearbox is from a 1996 Discovery 2.5. everything seems to work ok although i havent driven it. engine will be serviced and timing belt will be changed. what should i check/doublecheck before i think about buying this or should i run a mile?

Im all ears on what you guys think because im not that all that educated on landrovers but i think i would like one as kind of work vehcile and this one fits my budget.

Well I would be asking for the V5 and checking it has been changes ie engine gearbox it's on a difarance chassis from another landy
As it may because of the changes be needing a q plate Posable

Also is it a V8 or a Tdi?

I would also keep my money and look at a different one IMO

Personally I would run and never look back
 
Yes pritty much the same 100" chassis, for the most part some are almost a straight swap. Others however need some work depends what your puting in.

But it's still a chassis from one car to another chassis stamp as well

I could be wrong thought and if I am lesson learnd.
 
unless it is very cheap and you trust the seller completely i would run a mile, you can get a similar vehicle that isnt a bitsa for next to nothing these days, why tempt fate with something you know is a mish mash of other motors?
 
i would run a mile v8s dont have cam belts they have chains and unless you know the person through and through it sounds like a ringer to me a range rover classic chassis, disco body with v8 engine and manual box sounds to strange as normal people are putting classic bodies on disco chassis not the other way around and what happened to the disco chassis??
 
it seems strange to use the range rover chassis, its not even benefiting from tax exemption which would be the only logical reason for the swap.

Thanks for all your info, This vehicle is Irish and was converted/modified in order to avail of vintage/classic exemptions, 30year old vehicles have cheaper tax and are exempt from the NCT (the Irish MOT system) it is registered and paperwork is above board. Its a manual gearbox and Diesil engine and discovery body on range rover chassis (late 70's)
My question really is mechAnically based as I treat all used salesmen the same!!
What are the main signs that it is a dud? Where should I check for rust etc and what are not "small jobs"??

my advice is still the same dont buy it as technically its a ringer its a discovery (probably a nicked one at that) with the identity of a 1976 range rover, you come up against a copper who knows what he is looking at you could be in hot water mate, at the minimum they will want to give you an sva testjust steer clear major headache insuing with it
