My mate is looking at a Freelander TD4 Commercial 51 plate or maybe a Di.
Anything in particular to look for when viewing?

Bit different to a defender.

Usual suspects are vcu & ird particularly with the di models as they have the older higher stressed ird. Run a search on here about Freelander buying & check the sticky at the top for common faults. Best of luck to your mate.

All I would say is dont touch one with a barge poll, had mine 4 weeks and when (if ) this pile of **** gets us home from hols we will be changing it. Go for an Xtrail had one for years, good as gold, 4 weeks with a freelander and its dreadful. Sorry thats just the way it is.

I like mine and the one I had for ten years before.

Budget for a set of mods :

VCU - £400
EGR bypass £50
BMW breather conversion £35
New intercooler hoses £30
Synergy 2 £200
New Tyres to match them all up £300
A full oils and filter service £100

Look after it and enjoy it.

Funny how things go, I've had my Freelander for over 3 years & it's been great. One of my workmates had an Xtrail & had nothing but problems for the 6 months he owned it. Spent more time in the Garage than on the road, cost an absolute fortune & was eventually punted off to the local auction. I could have bought another Td4 & fitted a new with what he lost on that thing.

Is that for all free landers?

Well no but mostly - the EGR and Filter for TD4

I have had the 2.0Di - no problems now a TD4 niggles sorted - better all round but you have to sort them.

Petrol ones are another ball game - big bucks and can never really be sorted just postponed!

You won't need one if as you say your car's already been remapped.

Did I miss something - where does it mention remapped?

Synergy 2 - a diesel tuning box from Rover Ron ( google it) - effectively changes the ECU to smooth out glitches and increase power torque or both depending on the setting you dial up. Also compensates for an out of tolerance MAF.

Hope that helps

I had a 51 plate TD4 manual for just over a year. Must admit, I've spent more £££ maintaining that than I have on any other car. That said, it's 100 times nicer to drive than a disco 1 but if I really wanted something" nice to drive", I wouldn't have bought a 4x4 full stop.

Yeah, it was a different thread where Glenbo was still to collect his car but told us it had already been remapped.
