Hey All,

I'm fairly new here but have been enjoying reading a few posts, especially this one http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/my-first-discovery-72415-4.html.

Originally i was looking at getting a Series 3 that was just about road going and adding bits and bobs as and when i could afford it (20 and still at college so not exactly flush with cash!)

I've now decided that a Discovery is definately a better option as i'm looking to go on longer trips abroad and so on.

I noticed Drizz picked up a Disco (which looked in good nick) for £400!?

Just a few questions:

Alot of the discos on ebay are 150K+ for around £600, how much longer (in general) is an engine likely to last, even if its looked after properly?

Are there any models/years where the disco is avoidable for what ever reason?

Hopefully be dropping by here a bit more often, as i'm looking to get one within the next 4-6 weeks.
 
Yeh i suppose, i was hoping of spending a bit of money on it, and travelling fairly far away from home, so could do with making it slightly reliable :)

Some good off roader discos on ebay but more toward the 2k mark
 
dont BUY AN OFFROADED ONE!!!!!I would'nt buy my motor off me!Get a chealsea tracta thats done the school run n not much else.Then turn it into a offroading toy

See.. I disagree with this... but everyone has different opinions.
I'll explain why i disagree... :)

I also thought the same, buy standard and add bits.
started doing some maths on how much all the bits I would like to have would cost me... and adding that to the price of a standard disco..
would go well over what i could get a disco with the added bits on already..

Another thing is... you get a standard disco add bits and start giving it some abuse off roading.... and things start to break..

with one that has already been offroaded, the bits likely to break are likely to have been replaced by the previous owner.
if it comes with receipts even better...

i got my disco with all the bits I wished (just some that i still need to add),
receipts for every single part (so not bought off ebay second hand).. and more important including a new gearbox and transferbox put in 30k miles ago..
now, if you buy a standard disco with 130k miles....another 5k and the gearbox can go..or props..or this or that...

my disco has probably cost me around 600 quid more than a bog standard one, but I have extras worth over 1k if I had gone and bought it all..

and (in my opinon again), the more previous owners the better, because each one have probably added this and that..
 
that assumes you need to add bits.If hes just laning maybe a std disco would be good enough.Mines only got bigger tires and some protection.Thats it.Dont need to have lifts winches 44" wheels etc. A std disco will go places you wont expect

My initial plans are to go the likes of Tixover, Toms Farm in Wales (not sure if you have heard of this, great place, somewhere thats good for 4x4/motocross) and some local lanes.

I'm only 20 so most of my mates are into lowered fast cars rather than 2" lifted 4x4's so while i'll have passengers i'll be out on my own alot of the time. Even if i'm not doing anything to extreme this means i need all the gear to get myself out of trouble.

After getting used to 4x4ing i'm looking for go and do some Overland 'Weekend Adventures' so like i say, need something fairly hefty and reliable.

We had a 109 in the past and chopped it in for a Disco. While the Disco wouldn't do anything near what the 109 could, it was still great off road in standard form. It was also alot comfier, which works for me as i plan to travel distances and use it as a run about (journies of 5 miles or less in general for day to day use).

Like you say, even a decent set of all terrain tyres second hand will be in excess of £200, so if i can pick up a disco with some bits on it that i don't have to buy, then it means i can put money aside to engine/gearbox servicing/replacements.
 
I was told it was closed down early this year, so went down in my Van and my MX bike to check it out and it was open.

Tom is always involved in disputes with councils, alot of the times its because 4x4's and bikes leave his premises and start churning up the countryside.
