Hello,

I want to purchase a 90 for on road and off road use. I live on the boarders of the L.E Zone so it needs to meet the emissions requirement.
The trouble is i can't find one for around £5000.

I live on the edge of the L.E zone, older station wagons are suppose to be exempt are not all are, also alot of the time the windows will be added aftermarket so the best way to check is to get the reg number and put it into here.

youll either need a 2001 or newer or a genuine older station wagon.

I got lucky, I already had a hard top/van version when the le zone came into play, I stuck rear windows in the back and said mine was a genuine station wagon and they agreed I was exempt

From the LEZ website

Land Rovers
We have worked with Land Rover to establish which vehicles with the body type of 'Light 4x4 Utility Vehicle' are subject to the LEZ. Vehicles manufactured before 1973 are considered to be 'historic' vehicles and are exempt from the LEZ.

The vehicles listed below are subject to the LEZ standards:

All Defenders; 88s, 90s, 109s,110s, 127 and 130s (except station wagon variants with up to 9 seats)
Freelander Commercial
Discovery or Discovery Series 2 Commercial
Conversions (eg Ambulance, Motorhome)
The following vehicles are not subject to LEZ as these are classed as 'estates':

Defender, 88, 90,109 and 110 station wagons up to 9 seats inc the drivers
Certain vehicles meet the Euro 3 standard because they are early adopters:

All Defenders, 90s, 110s, 127s and 130s manufactured after 6 August 2001
Freelander Commercial manufactured after 14 September 2000
Discovery or Discovery Series 2 Commercial manufactured after 2 July 2001
Conversions (e.g. Ambulance, Motorhome) manufactured after 2 January 2002
We've updated our database to reflect these vehicles' emissions standards.

A small number of Defenders, 90s and 110s may be a 'station wagon', but may not be classified as such by the DVLA. If your vehicle has side windows and fixed seats in the back of the vehicle, and up to 9 seats including the drivers seat, it will not be subject to the LEZ. In these circumstances you need to:

For models registered from 1998 - correct the body type description, vehicle model details and/or number of seats with the DVLA
For models registered before 1998 - register your vehicle with TfL with suitable photographic proofs if you intend to use the vehicle in the LEZ.
If you have a Land Rover which is not listed above, please contact us to find out if your vehicle is subject to LEZ.

I have looked into this as I travel into the zone from time to time. As maverick said it needs to be registered as a station wagon not a utility 4x4. You may be better off getting a non-compliant vehicle and fitting a filter for £1000-£1500, or try avoiding all ANPR cameras :)

The trouble is i travel 3 miles to work and the last 1/2 mile is within the zone, there is no avoiding the cameras.

So in a nutshell if its pre 98 retro fitted with side windows and seats it OK? Don't sound quite right

No entirely, if its pre 98 you write into TFL and hope, I got lucky but others havent.

After 98 you have to contact DVLA and ive thats its almost impossible to get them to change it, they want proof from landrover that it is a genuine station wagon.

Best advice is to buy a genuine station wagon or a 2002 onwards

Good luck with it, id make sure you include the text about pre 1998 models etc or they will probably just refer you to the DVLA
