I'll look at the Freelander 2.5 petrol and see how it goes. If in superb condition I might chance it but any hint of something odd will decline. I'm commited to test drive it anyway. Budget wise it is cheap compared to what I could get alterrnatives: TD4's or Disco. I realy don't want to up my budget and it will be a third car. Taking everyones advice then it should really be a TD4 but finding a hard top auto might be tricky and would be another grand. We will have to see.

that extra grand will pale into insignificance when the head gasket goes on the V6.

If you're (rightly) worried about the performance of the standard Td4 then a 200/300 TDI auto Discovery won't be the way to go.
Consider a Roverron Synergy tuning box with egr bypass - total cost around £250 & run with Millers powersport 4 diesel additive in the fuel & you'll boost your power to just over 150 bhp assuming your standard engine is in good nick & working properly. I myself run this spec on my 03 Td4 auto & you won't worry about hills it's as if they aren't there the torque is that good, though it won't outperform a V6 in the 0-60 dash. It is a good improvement over standard & you should now get a good Td4 for £3k leaving you your £500 for tuning & secondhand wheels/tyres.

if you are worried about performance - forget any landrover - go for a Cayenne - crap off road but quick.
