I have just been offered a 02 discovery mot failure is it worth buying it failed on the following
Reason(s) for failure
  • Offside Front Body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings floor (6.1.B.2)
  • Offside Front Body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings out rigger (6.1.B.2)
  • Offside Outer Body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings sill (6.1.B.2)
  • Offside Rear Outer Body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings out rigger (6.1.B.2)
  • Nearside Front Body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings out rigger (6.1.B.2)
  • Nearside Rear Body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings ou rigger (6.1.B.2)
  • Offside Rear Body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings chasis (6.1.B.2)
  • Horn not working (1.6.2a)

Im handy with a welder as have owned a few transits over the years but would the chassis be to far gone to save in this case. I cant get to have a look at it as its over 200 miles away and dont know enough about landrovers rotting to make a wasted journey if its gonna be beyond hope when I get there thanks

How much?

All that lot sounds like a new chassis jobbie, the bodies on D2s are pretty sound and don't really rot but the chassis disintegrate before your eyes if you're not careful.
 
Its going for 800 and ive got a budget of 1 grand to get it sorted but dont want to bite off more than I can chew how much would a new chassis be?
 
Sounds like the chassis is knackered, you can only weld onto what's left! What it's worth depends on the mileage. I wouldn't want to be paying more than £500 for it assuming the rest of it is in reasonable working order, especially considering the distance your travelling for it. A new chassis would be more than a grand I think, and if you're going to the trouble of changing it then a galvanised one would be good.
 
Wow that sounds too far gone unless you do a chassis swop don't know price for ad2 but got a new series 2 one which is galvanised and done to original spec and that was£1200
 
I don't think you can get D2 chassis anywhere near as easily as you can Defenders so I would walk away unless you like welding and have time on your hands. Just getting to the outriggers to weld will be floor out etc and lots of effort. You could always post on here and see if someone will take a look.
 
Thanks for all the replys gonna get the reg tomorrow and check the rest of the mot's see how long the rot has been happening as the woman who owns it rekons this is the first time its failed due to corrosion
 
I wouldn't bother wasting another minute on it,there are loads of d2s about,good ones are not so easy to find and not cheap but worth finding.I got mine 6 years ago after a long search and looking at loads but she was a beaut then and still is
 
I think unles you’re desperate to not be in the house for a while it’s probably not worth driving 200 miles and back for. My mate just picked up a V reg for £1500 in good nick needed very little doing to it and is solid
 
As everyone else has said, this sounds like a new chassis is required - IME, it is quite likely that there be little to weld to, unless the MOT guy wanted to buy it for himself:rolleyes: - IOW, we need pictures, and, I'd suggest, so do you before contemplating travelling 200 miles for it.

I'd also suggest that, on face value it is over priced, and that fixing it for £200 might soon become a dream - or is that a nightmare :eek:....
 
Is there any particular years that rot worse than others? Iv heard the earlier ones are less prone to bad rust?
The car mentioned sounds a lot of work,the problem being every bit of that is laid on your back on the floor.That is unless you have access to a ramp...

The earlier ones do seem to be better in terms of rust, contrary to what others say the body’s do rot too but it’s hidden and hard to find
 
Yeah my previous td5 had bad rot on the inner wings and bulkhead.But everyone says the body’s are good lol

LOL D1, inner wings both sides, bulkhead, both footwells, door post bottoms, sills, boot floor, inner rear quarter panels, rear body crossmember.

Can't say I've ever seen that much rot in the body of a D2 but ho hum :rolleyes:
