So I’m sitting on the bus out of Edinburgh last night reading about everyone’s problems thinking what a crappy time of year to have to work on yer landy. I jump in the landy at the car park put it into reverse and instantly hear that dull thud from underneath. Ended up chugging home at 20mph for 14 miles. Woke up to 6 inches of snow this morning. Don’t think the landy will be fixed today or tomorrow. Took the wife’s 4 wheel drive this morning, at least it had proper heater :(.
 
Bad luck mate ... did you know it was on the way out?
Look on the bright side only 6" of snow, compared to the several feet we get up here must feel like summer ;-)

Bollock freezing weather today, but dry. So I took off the near side drive flange. Surprisingly that's where it failed! I think the way I parked and then reversed slightly uphill and turning stressed it too much. Glad I took it slow going home, but even still the swarf and crap has ground the hub but, locking washer n drive flange inside face. It's an unusual place to have a failure. Going to fit new wheel bearings for good measure. Spare parts came to £56.00. It's snowing again here and the landys down; very frustrating.

Thanks. That’s exactly where it failed. I think the extra damage was having to drive for 14 miles. Still slightly concerned that it’s failed in that way. This is the second time in four years that half shaft has failed. I’ve got a kinda zombie differential. Discovered that one side is 10 spline (the side that failed) pre 1980 and the R/H side is 24 spline. A previous owner has dicked around with the differential. I suspect an axle swop out and a cobbled solution. Makes ordering parts a feckin problem.BTW Craddocks have got this aresey new parts ordering where you have to state the vehicle reggie. FFS they then think they have licence to dictate what you should be ordering-just listen to the customer! Another issue i haves with Craddocks is increasing use of replacement parts numbers on their system. I’m sitting with the full parts manual and they’re trying to contradict what I know to be correct. They could also get a bit more friendly. Hey ho.
 
I thought the diff end of the 24 spline shafts was exactly the same as the 10 and therefore the diff is the same. I take it that it’s not just the drive flange end that’s different?
 
Yeah I have a later halfshaft and flange as a replacement for that broken one.
Inner is still 10 spline.

I’ve got a zombie differential. Should be the same but they aren’t. Shafts are same splines each end so somebody has fitted fitted a later/ earlier connection in the differential. It’s weird Spock but true!

Exactly. Except yours is the long shaft n mine’s the short arse. Parts arrived today, gonna do the wheel bearing whilst I have it open, back on the road Saturday. Yeah!
 
Mine should have the later shafts but has been changed to the earlier 10 spline at some point. The front are the correct 24 spline though. I guess you are having to change to the late type wheel bearings too to match the shaft.
 
Thanks James. I’ll know when I get to the job on Saturday. It’s actually the hub but and inner face of the drive flange that’s been scoured by the swarf. I think the bearings may be okay.
