hi,i see some photos of defenders with bush wires fitted, can i buy them anywhere or are they home made, many thanks Jim.

you can purchase them but its easy to make them. if you know a lorry driver worth his salt, ask him to get you a T.I.R. cord, you will need some good cutters to chop it up but hey presto, fix it to the top of the screen and the front of the wing area, job done ;)

What is the purpose of them except a washing line for your socks after walking in a deep puddle?

They're for if you drive past a low branch, instead of it just gently nudging your windscreen, it can first catch onto the wire & build up enough potential energy to violently release itself & smash the friggin thing!!

Limb risers (bush deflectors)

Limb risers (bush deflectors) go from bull bar to roof top, and is intended to rise limbs blocking the way when greenlaning/offroading, lift them past the windscreen and over the roof. Thus it will protect vehicle from vegetation - just like what a bull bar does to the front of the vehicle..

I find it not advisable to have such attached to vehicle on-road, as it could cause extreme harm if hitting pedestrians...would probably cut a person in two. So it is necessary to make it detachable. To make it easily detachable, it is based on using shackles up front, and running free behind a roof bar..

For each side, a short length of wire was cut, and pulled through a piece of old hose. In each end made a short loop, and fastened with wire-clamps. Through these two loops runs a shackle to hold it together after pulling around top of bullbar. If bullbar has eyehooks, that's a better way of fastening the wire.

A long lenght of wire runs from this shackle, behind a Thule roofbar, and forward to bullbar on other side, where it is attached to a turnbuckle. Tightening the turnbuckle, the limb risers will go tight, which is needed to lift thicker limbs off top of vehicle. Or the roofbar can be pushed further backwards, which is easiest way of initial tightening the limb risers.

I have 'em fitted to my Disco permanently. I hear what you say about "the could cut a person in two" nut the Disco has 32" tyres, a 3" lift and a 6mm winch bumper. If I hit a pedestrian they'd be ****ed anyway, so I may as well cut 'em up and make 'em easier for the coroner to bag!

You could hang bobble hats on them - to scare of tree huggers - Gamekeepers do the same with crows on fences :D

Stick a bobble-hat on one wire and a pair of boots on the other. You could then say "That's all that's left of 'im"

MATE IF SOMEONE IS UP ON YOUR BONNET THEN ITS PROBABALY A BIT TOO LATE TO WORRY ABOUT REMOVING THE BUSH WIRES!!!

THEY ARE GREAT AND WILL SAVE A LOT OF CRAP FROM BOUNCING OFF YOU'RE SCREEN.. MY 90 HAS PASSED TWO MOTS NOW WITH THEM ON AND I HAVE NEVER HEARD ANYBODY FROM ANY AUTHOURITY SAY THEY ARE ILLEGAL..

GRAB YOURSELF A SET...

Buy the bits from B&Q and make your own. Oh and they are illegal to use on a public highway in the UK and that includes greenlanes. If you get an arsey copper stop you. yer could get a fixed penalty. and be made to remove em. so make em removable.

The other thing they can do is sometimes the branch slips off and get between the wire and the screen and you end up pulling half the tree with you or kanackering your roof or rack
