new to this forum so sorry if this is all old news to you!

have a 200tdi in a 101. recently the injector pump failed - think the idle spring popped off as engine would not idle, no torque at idle speeds and lots of black smoke when pulling away from junctions.

then it started smelling very very hot when under load, climbing long hills.
coolant and oil under 90 degrees but much higher than normal.

then cold starting became difficult, loads and loads of grey smoke until engine hot.

so, fitted another injector pump. Idles properly now but, cold starting is still difficult, belches out huge amounts of foul grey smoke until warm, when it is chuffing lots of blue smoke and burning lots of oil. still smells very hot when driven hard, and now running on for 1 to 5 seconds after switching off.

no chuffing out of oil filler cap, turbo hoses oily but not unusual. rough idle until warm. rough fast idle till warm.

does this sound like head gasket faliure??? I am thinking that piston rings or valve seals would result in crankcase pressure / chuffing from oil filler cap?

runnig on diesel and oil at max load would increase exhaust gas temp, hence the hot exhaust smell???

i may have got the timing out 1 tooth when i replaced the belt...?, that was about a week before the injector pump went wrong.
timing out = running hot exhaust gasses = burned a valve or piston allowing oil in...?

I was always told what ever the fault is its related to what you did to it last even if its at the other end of the vehicle, and you know what? the old bastard has been right many many times when i **** up!
Course i havent seen him for over 20 years but i certainly remember him.
So sort pump and timing then go from there.

that's the principle I try to work on, even if you're convinced you did the last thing correctly...check it again.
in this case, 3 days before the injector pump broke i had changed the timing belt...is possible i got it 1 tooth out on the crank but i'm sure i did it correct.
since then i've discovered the turbo wastegate is siezed solid, and took out the injectors and found cylinders 1 & 2 are full of oil, 3 and 4 have some oil in. have also found several helicoil thread inserts in innapropriate places, e.g. the timing belt idler pulley stud (causing the idler pulley to be slightly off centre), so I think previous owner has been less than careful...so...
have bought a replacement engine!
