Bull bars are ****. They're pointless and make the steering heavy. Home made ones will be worse. So jog that idea on and fix summit that needs fixing instead of making work for yer self. And making yer motor look gash.

If you had cattle then you would instantly reconsider that bull bars on my 90 saved my front end dozens of times and I think it makes it look more original with it on
 
IMO,

Bull bars that have wraparounds a rubbish, If they bend then they can cause more damage to the wing and make any repair more difficult. My Father had one on his 90 and a beast bent it back into the wing.

A home made one, may also have the potential to pass on any impact force to the chassis and thus cause damage there.

had one of those wrap round bull bars on my series , hit a deer one night and by christ did it do some damage

the bull bar caused more by being fitted than without one

never fitted one again

was really upset hitting the deer , it just came out from nowhere and i didn't stand a chance of missing it , i was only doing around 35 mph , at least the deer was killed instantly

see so many pics etc of the amount of damage livestock can do, like hitting a brick wall

Would wolf style light guards do the job better than a bull bar and then an A bar in the middle want some protection on my lights and grill

personally i dont like bull bars , the light guards are i feel a better alternative , but depending on the impact and regardless of what's fitted may not ever prevent them being broken

but don't think u could ever fit anything that would stand up to hitting any larger livestock etc ,

assume alot of insurance companies wouldnt being happy if the large metal style bull bars are fitted

what about a heavy duty bumper, setting the lights back abit

understand where ur coming from in trying to protect the lights etc,

also about pedestrian safety , as it would be like having a cheese grater fitted

the newer plastic styled A bars look ok,

at the end of the day with any accessory it's what function u want it for

no probs , have a look at some of the other defender projects on here, plenty of ideas around

don't get me wrong and none of my business, would it better to get all the engine side sorted out first ,

assume though like all engine changes, make sure the engine hoist is strong enough and you've eaten 3 x shredded wheat for brekkie, lol

I'm waiting for my sisters boyfriend to move into the shed his cars I mean so we can work on the td5 with all his equipment etc it's a 1999 hi capacity

can't remember the last time i saw a hi capacity ,

any pics plse , hope ur dad is safe and well , dare i ask ref the hi cap and how it became damaged or is that a sore point , lol

It's ok Just some big dents etc it's been standing about 5 years that's when the block cracked

Nah it looks gash and causes damage in a crash.

reminded me approx some 25 -30 x years ago i saw the aftermath when a horse hit a ford XR4 , it rolled up and over the roof on the passenger side,

driver got out safely, near side was completely crushed , it was like a steam roller had gone over the car, thk god i didn't see it happen

really scary stuff

It's had a lot of new things before we forgot about it for years in the garage it's had
new hoses new
rad
new exhaust
New fuel pump
New brakes and disc
New fan
And a lot of odd bits
All these were to try and cure the overheating:eek::eek::mad:

Light guards wont do anything with regards to the amount of protection a bull bar (decent made one) gives.
If you think a vehicle was more damaged by having a bull bar , imagine how an ali wing would bend with tha same force applied that bent the bull bar . I have hit enough "fauna" in Australia to fully appreciate that they are indispensable around animals . Its bad enough when lights get damaged , but the main reason is to protect the radiator , so you dont have a very long walk home . JMHE
 
I've a bull bar fitted to my 1984 110, it dates from the days when they were commercially available. I wouldn't be without it. Within 5 miles of the house, I've hit deer, had goats, cattle and loose horses in the road. The damage to the front of a Landrover without the bull bar would catastrophic.

Despite my intense dislike of the things I accept that 'bars have a purpose under these circumstances though I think there is a difference between commercially available items & the OP's intention of making one up from scaffold tubes :(

If it's the first then I'm not sure that you're cut out for farming.

If it's the second option, park it where they can't see it and use your sister's bf's car if you need to drive near them.

If it's the third you'd make good money putting it on YouTube.

I don't think me or any other farmer would ram a cow
But I've had quite a few lights smashed by them rubbing against it etc and by parking it further away the cows hear the Landrover 100 miles away and charge at it so it protects the Landrover and quite a few farmers have bull bars
